Red Ginseng

Chinese red ginseng, also known as Panax ginseng or Asian ginseng, is a perennial herb native to China and other parts of East Asia. It is among the most well-known and highly regarded medicinal herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Chinese ginseng belongs to the Araliaceae family and has a long history of therapeutic use. Something unique about Chinese ginseng is that it is grown for at least six years before harvesting to reach peak maturity and the highest concentration of active compounds. These compounds include:

  • Ginsenosides – These are a class of steroidal saponins that are considered the main active components of ginseng. Ginsenosides are unique to the ginseng plant and are responsible for many of the root's medicinal properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective effects.
  • Polysaccharides – Chinese red ginseng contains complex carbohydrates called polysaccharides that have robust immunomodulatory properties and exhibit antioxidant effects that protect against oxidative stress.
  • Peptides – Chinese red ginseng contains a variety of different short chains amino acids with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities.
  • Phenolic compounds – These include phenolic acids and flavonoids with antioxidant properties.
  • Essential oils – Various volatile essential oils in the root offer antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Medicinal Benefits And Applications Of Chinese Red Ginseng

Chinese ginseng has been demonstrated to have marked adaptogenic properties, meaning it helps the body better cope with physical and mental stress. It is also considered a Qi (vital energy) tonic that promotes overall health, vitality, and well-being. It effectively boosts the immune system, enhances cognitive function, improves physical endurance, and supports cardiovascular health. Chinese ginseng is commonly recommended for fatigue, low libido, and recurring colds and flu.

Chinese Red Ginseng Supplements

If you’ve decided to give Chinese ginseng a try, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. It can be found as a dried whole root, with or without the outer skin. It is also widely available in Asian markets in sliced root form, which is convenient for brewing herbal teas or cooking. You can opt for powdered ginseng that can be added to beverages or used as an ingredient in traditional herbal remedies. Of course, if you’re looking for therapeutic doses, you should probably go with capsules or tablets or even an extract or tincture, which all feature concentrated forms of the root.

There is no set recommended daily intake of ginseng, though most supplements suggest a daily dose ranging between 100-3000mg. For optimal efficacy and safety, always follow the dosing instructions on the product you purchase.

Final Thoughts

Despite its name, Chinese red ginseng is not naturally red in colour. Its root, which is the most sought-after part of the plant, typically has a light tan or beige colour. However,

processing does affect the final colour of the root. Indeed, what we call Chinese red ginseng is created via a processing method that involves steaming and drying the ginseng root for several hours. The heat from steaming causes the ginseng's natural colour to darken, resulting in a reddish appearance.

Interestingly, this not only changes its colour but also its chemical composition and medicinal properties. Steaming ginseng root is believed to enhance its medicinal properties, making it more potent. This is why TCM practitioners often prefer red ginseng over unprocessed white ginseng.
