History of Now Foods

In 1962, Now Foods started as a small chain of health food stores in Chicago, and by 1968, it had started formulating its own supplements.

During the year, 2000, Now received GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certification from the NPA and obtained their organic manufacturer certification, and during this same year, Now Supplements Canada was first introduced to the Canadian market.

In 2018 Now received ISO certification and in more recent years they were recognized for their cruelty-free practices and honoured with PETA’s Cruelty-Free certification. They have also made the move to using 100% post-consumer recycled resin supplement bottles as a way to practice environmental sustainability.

Now Essential Oils Quality Standards

Now essential oils are either steam distilled or cold pressed to ensure the utmost quality and purity. These aromatic chemicals are extracted from the leaves, buds, flowers, fruit, bark, root, or wood of varying plants. Essential oils contain natural compounds like terpenes, acids, aldehydes, alcohols, esters, and ketones, all with unique health benefits.

Steam distillation and cold pressing are superior extraction methods. When shopping for essential oils, you will want to stay away from oils that are solvent-extracted because they won’t be as pure. Now’s steam distillation process consists of the following steps:

• Plant material is placed on the screen in a steam still. Steam rises from underneath and vaporizes the essential oil found in the plant material. The steam and oil vapour then rises into the condenser chamber.
• The steam and oil are condensed into a liquid and put through to a receiving vessel.
• The essential oil rises to the surface of the liquid and is separated. The water is returned to the broiler to be reboiled into steam.

Oils that are derived from plants are generally steam-distilled. Now’s cold pressing process is just as clean, this process consists of the following four steps:

• The peel or rind of the fruit is pierced to open the sacs containing the essential oil.
• The whole fruit is pressed to squeeze out the juice and oil.
• The excretions are centrifuged to separate the liquids and solids.
• The oil is then separated from the liquid.

Oils that come from fruit, like citrus oils, are generally cold-pressed. No matter which extraction method is used, the oils are then filtered, winterized, or distilled to help clarify them by removing any debris or waxes.
