The need for a multivitamin

In days gone by, the need for a multivitamin was much lower than it is today. The depletion of the mineral content in our soils, long-time storage "advances" and modern day food processing techniques, however, have filled our supermarkets with foods that have no where near the vitamin and mineral content enjoyed by our predecessors. Compounding the problem is the lifestyle most of us now lead. In the rush to squeeze as much into our day as possible, carefully prepared meals are reserved for "that special occasion" and convenience foods constitute our daily sustenance.

Children and teens do not escape this modern form of malnutrition. In fact, they are often so busy with after-school and weekend activities that grabbing a hotdog and a diet cola becomes the norm. Couple this with the fact that the Boys too require more calcium than most of them obtain from their diet. Boys need the most calcium between the ages of 9 and 18.

The need for Vitamin C

While the RDA for Vitamin C is set at 45-50mg for children and teens, most health professionals agree that this is far too low. Vitamin C plays an important role in the body, supporting the structures of the skin and the cardiovascular system, and providing the immune support needed to fight colds and other infections. Schools, recreational centres, swimming pools and other places where kids group together are rife with germs and viruses. This is true of the summer months as well as in winter.

The B vitamins

Children and teens are particularly likely to have a low intake of one or more B-vitamins. Vitamin B is found in whole grains and green, leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach. By the time most processed cereals reach the breakfast table, however, their vitamin content has been seriously depleted. This is why they are often fortified with the Vitamin B complex. Unfortunately, most breakfast cereals are high in sugar content and, for this reason, many parents are now finding alternative breakfasts for their children, including bagels. While wholegrain bagels are a good source of B-vitamins, their grainy texture does not please the palates of most young people.
