Brain Health
The brain is well fed with blood vessels, which ensure that it is constantly supplied with adequate oxygen, glucose, and nutrients to keep it functioning optimally. If the amount of blood delivered to the brain drops too low, the result can be dizziness, decreased ability to concentrate, irritability, increased sensitivity to stress, and so on. If blood flow to the brain is cut off and oxygen supply stops, the resulting "anoxia" (oxygen deprivation) can cause unconsciousness, brain damage, andwithin a very short timedeath. But even mild impediments in blood flow to the brain can affect its function, sometimes so slowly that it escapes notice until the symptoms, such as deteriorating memory, become pronounced.
Although the brain and nervous system is somewhat protected from factors which can invade other body cells, its segregation also makes it prone to the build-up of toxins and other harmful agents. Because it contains a significant amount of fat, fat-soluble toxins like heavy metals, and environmental chemicals, like DDT, can concentrate in the brain leading to poor memory. Poor diet hampers memory because the brain is an extremely vital area that has high metabolic requirements.
Fluctuating blood sugar is not conducive to optimal brain functioning and memory. Fats, amino acids and vitamins must also be in abundant supply for nervous system functioning. The brain and nerve sheaths are made of fats that are deficient in the standard North American diet. This results in compromised nerve conduction and brain cell communication, which can compromise memory. Stress and emotional upset impact on memory by depleting neurotransmitters and leading to a build up of damaging agents called free radicals. Free radicals have been associated with the degeneration of the brain.
If memory changes are a concern please see a health professional. Memory change can be a sign of depression, arteriosclerosis or other degenerative brain conditions. The side effect of some medications can lead to memory lapses. Included in this are diuretics and anti-depressants.
How does Vinpocetine help memory?
Vinpocetine can support improved blood flow to the brain and improve a variety of brain functions, including memory. Synthesized in the 1960s from vincamine, an extract of the periwinkle plant, studies have shown that vinpocetine has a wide range of activities that support brain health. Chief among these, it increases blood flow to the brain, it increases energy in brain cells, and it speeds up the use of glucose and oxygen. The brain is very organized, with different functions taking place in different regions. However, memory is a function that takes place in many different parts of the brain. Because vinpocetine is well absorbed by several different cerebral (brain) tissues, it is able to enhance blood flow to many of the different areas that play a role in memory. Several studies have demonstrated that vinpocetine can improve a wide range of symptoms of brain impairment among older adults experiencing decreased cognitive function. The improvements occurred in areas including behaviour, mood, orientation, ability to perform daily routine tasksand memory. This strongly suggests that some forms of age-related cognitive impairment are related to decreased blood flow to the brain, and can be improved by increasing blood flow. Vinpocetine has also been tested on healthy volunteers with normal brain function. In one study, treatment with vinpocetine for just two days significantly improved short-term memory.
