Stash Tea’s Brand History
Stash Tea was established in 1972 by two tea enthusiasts. They were obsessed with the flavours and botanicals used in teas. Stash Tea came from humble beginnings, starting in the basement of a home in Southwest Portland; the founders would blend and brew new concoctions.
Since then, they have upgraded their facilities but have remained committed to innovating tasty teas with premium ingredients. Stash Tea was amongst the first to bring the rich tradition of chai tea to the USA when an employee shared his mother’s chai recipe with the founders. Since then, Stash tea delved deeper into the world of chai, expanding its chai collection to include over 7 unique flavours.
They were also ahead of their time when they made their lemon ginger blend. At first, they were met with hesitation from customers, but today, lemon ginger is the #1 flavoured herbal tea in the US.
Beyond creating innovative, high-quality teas, Stash also considers the environment. They use packaging that’s plastic-free and recyclable boxes. Their teabags are compostable and made of all-natural, unbleached fibres.
Ingredient Quality & Control Processes
At Stash Tea, they realize a cup of tea goes beyond taste alone; it’s about the feeling it evokes physically and mentally. That’s why they only use the best plant-based, GMO-free ingredients and plastic-free teabags. Their ingredients are also free from the top 8 allergens in the US (milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans), and they receive statements from their suppliers confirming this.
Stash Teas are certified Kosher by KOF-K Kosher Supervision and gluten-free. They don’t use malt in any of their blends, and they obtain signed statements from suppliers that the ingredients they purchase are gluten-free.
They also make every effort to source pesticide-free ingredients. Stash Tea adheres to the best practice food and safety guidelines set forth by the FDA and only works with suppliers who minimize or eliminate the use of pesticides when growing their tea, herbs, and spices. Stash performs regular tests for pesticides and other chemicals commonly used on crops.
Their organic line is certified organic by the USDA and Quality Assurance International (QAI) and grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides.
Their teabags are made from cellulose (wood), and test results show that chlorine dioxide is not present in their tea bag filter paper. Their filter paper is also free from epichlorohydrin, and their paper machine folds and presses the bags, removing the need for glue.
