Kurt Seidensticker launched Vital Proteins in 2013 when his passion for collagen supplements began. Kurt’s interest in collagen started when he started experiencing knee pain from running. As an avid runner, this was a nightmare, and he wanted to find a solution that would offer a dose of amino acids for protein synthesis. For him, collagen was the answer. Vital Proteins started with the goal of helping others live fuller, more vibrant lives. It is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois and in 2020, Nestlé Health Science acquired a majority stake in the company. Nestlé Health Science is a global leader in nutritional science with headquarters in Switzerland.
Aside from formulating collagen products that can boost your wellness, Vital Proteins is passionate about caring for the environment. They obtain their collagen peptides from responsible sources and make sure their suppliers align with their goals and values. They do this by ensuring suppliers follow a traceability program that shows where the raw materials come from, and by 2025, they plan to have a deforestation-free primary supply chain. To reduce its plastic usage, Vital Proteins is removing plastic scoops from its products to reduce over 250,000 pounds of plastic annually. They are also working hard to lower the plastic use in their packaging by converting it to paperboard tubs.
Quality Control Measures
Supplements are only as good as their quality control measures. Vital Proteins understands this. That’s why their facilities meet the strict standards for NSF and SQF certifications and also meet Global Food Safety Initiative standards.
They prioritize sourcing quality, purpose-driven ingredients and follow a “clean” approach. This approach means they formulate their products with recognizable ingredients, pursue reputable third-party certifications and package products using BPA and BPS-free canisters. To keep up with their clean product initiative, their bovine collagen peptides are sourced from cattle that are mainly grass-fed and pastured-raised.
Vital Proteins manufacturing process follows strict protocols, with final products being tested to meet Health Canada’s food and natural health product requirements, including heavy metal and microbiological components testing.
