Liposomal Vitamin C
What is Liposomal Vitamin C?
Vitamin C is one of the most widely used supplements worldwide thanks to its well-documented health benefits. Unsurprisingly, Vitamin C supplements come in myriad shapes, sizes, and forms, though not all such supplements offer the same health benefits. One form of vitamin C that has been gaining a lot of interest in recent years is liposomal vitamin C, which is quite distinct from most other forms of C. Indeed, liposomal C delivers the vitamin inside tiny fat droplets which makes it easier for the body to absorb and allows for more of the vitamin to get to cells or tissues where it is needed. This puts liposomal vitamin C at a distinct advantage over regular vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which is known to have a low absorption rate. In fact, studies have demonstrated that we can only absorb between 12-14% of the ascorbic acid naturally present in food, the rest being excreted via urine. The absorption of ascorbic acid supplements is even worse, with the body only reportedly able to absorb 7-8% of the total amount.
Because liposomal vitamin C is presented in fat particles (liposomes) it is protected from stomach acids and enzymes and avoids the harsh environment of the digestive tract altogether.
The result is that more of the vitamin C can be absorbed: liposomal vitamin C has an absorption of upwards of 85%. This makes it an ideal form of vitamin C when you need to quickly raise plasma levels, or when you're looking for a hefty dose of vitamin C to boost your immune system.
Benefits of Liposomal Vitamin C
- Boosts Vitamin C Levels Quickly
- Enhanced Absorption Rate (85% +)
- Promotes Healthy Aging & Neurological Health
- Stimulates Immunity
Who Needs Liposomal Vitamin C?
While most vitamin C supplements will eventually raise blood levels of vitamin C when taken consistently, those living with chronic conditions, including immune-compromised individuals, as well as those who lead stressful lifestyles may benefit from liposomal C thanks to its enhanced bioavailability and absorption. Athletes, bodybuilders, and hard trainers would also be ideal candidates for liposomal C supplementation, to boost their performance and improve post-exercise recovery.
Potency & Dosing
Liposomal C supplements can be purchased in 1,000 to 2,000mg, and the recommended daily dose is usually 1 to 2g daily in divided doses, though your health care provider may recommend a higher dose, according to the condition/symptoms being addressed.
Final Thoughts
Vitamin C supplements, in general, can cause side effects like nausea and vomiting, heartburn, stomach cramps, headaches, flushing, and loose stools or diarrhea. The higher the dose you take, the more likely the side effects – this is why it's usually recommended to separate your total daily intake into divided doses.
Because liposomal C has a much higher absorption/increased intracellular delivery of vitamin C, side effects may appear more quickly or may be more intense, even with a lower dose. If side effects do manifest, simply go back to a lower dose.
