Vitamin C Powder

The popularity of shakes, smoothies, and smoothie bowls has been growing steadily throughout the 21st century. The segment has evolved from a simple pre-workout drink to a dessert and now a quick on-the-go healthy meal replacement option. In 2022, it’s safe to say that the smoothie sector now dominates the global beverage industry, thanks to the growing number of consumers adopting healthy lifestyles and embracing shakes and smoothies loading them with protein powders, superfood boosters, and myriad powdered vitamins. Vitamin C powder is a natural addition to healthy shakes, smoothies, and smoothie bowls and can greatly enhance their nutritional profile.

Powdered Vitamin C is convenient and practical and allows you to top up on this essential nutrient with a simple scoop added to your beverage of choice. Given the vast array of powdered vitamin C flavours, they are also ideally suited to livening up your water and making sure you stay hydrated and energized.

Vitamin C Powder Supplement Attributes

Absorption

Powdered vitamin C comes either as regular ascorbic acid or buffered vitamin C, both of which offer excellent absorbability since absorption starts directly in the mouth. However, powders that combine calcium ascorbate with vitamin C metabolites, such as Ester-C, are thought to offer even better absorption of vitamin C.

Dosing

Vitamin C powder comes in a range of potencies and offers the best dosing flexibility of all the supplement delivery formats since the dose can be customized to every person's unique needs and preferences.

Storage

The one downside of powdered supplements is that they are extremely sensitive to moisture, which makes them clump up and harden. So, it’s important to store your vitamin C powder in a cool, dry place, away from moisture. Always leave the silica packet inside your vitamin C powder, to absorb any potential moisture and maintain shelf-life as long as possible. Never refrigerate vitamin C powder.

Excipients

While powdered supplements may not have the same shelf-life as capsules, they are, however, "clean" in that they do not call for the use of tableting or capsuling ingredients. Therefore, they naturally contain few excipients beyond flavours and sweeteners. Pay attention to the label of the product you're considering to ensure that the non-medicinals are clean and come from natural sources.

Vitamin C Powder Potency & Forms

Vitamin C powder usually comes in 500 or 1,000mg potency, in either a jar of loose powder or in individuals sachets you can throw in your gym bag or purse and bring along with you wherever the day takes you.

Getting The Most Out of Your Vitamin C Powder

Powdered forms of vitamin C expose teeth to more acid than vitamin C tablets or capsules. This can erode tooth enamel over time. If you do use powdered or chewable forms of vitamin C it's important to rinse your mouth with water afterward. You can also select a non-acidic form of vitamin C (buffered C instead of ascorbic acid) to prevent this issue altogether.

A buffered vitamin C powder such as Ester-C is also a great idea if regular ascorbic acid is hard on your stomach and causes symptoms such as upset stomach, gas, bloating loose stools, or diarrhea.
