What Is D-Alpha Tocopherols?

Despite the mysterious-sounding name, it is, in fact, the most common form of natural vitamin E, found in over 90% of vitamin supplements. The first thing to know is that the term “vitamin E” is used collectively for a family of eight chemical compounds; alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol and alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol, each having its own distinct biological activity. Of these, alpha-tocopherol is the most biologically active form of vitamin E, and many experts believe, the only form able to reverse vitamin E deficiency.
But this only applies to “d-alpha-tocopherol”, the naturally occurring vitamin E found in foods such as plant oils, nuts, seeds, and green leafy vegetables.
Synthetic forms are also available as “dl-alpha-tocopherol”, which is generally derived from petroleum products, so obviously a far less desirable option. Synthetic vitamin E is also less bioavailable and only about half as potent. Clinical data has shown that because of its molecular structure, natural vitamin E is much better absorbed in the body, and because specific transport proteins in the liver can easily bind to it, natural vitamin E is more easily transported to other tissues for use. As such, it is the preferred choice and offers strong antioxidant support to the body.
