What Are Common or Seasonal Allergies?
Allergies, also known as allergic diseases, refer to several conditions caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to typically harmless substances in the environment, known as common or seasonal allergies,— such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, insect stings, mould, latex, or food that doesn't cause a reaction in most people. Many people suffer from common allergies year-round, which can cause a range of bothersome symptoms such as runny nose, dry and itchy eyes, scratchy throat, pain or tenderness around the cheeks, eyes or forehead, and coughing, wheezing or breathlessness. Itchy skin, rashes, and hives are also common symptoms.
Allergic diseases include hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and anaphylaxis and their development is due to genetic and environmental factors. Allergic diseases are treated by avoiding known allergens, using medications such as steroids and antihistamines, and the EpiPen (injectable adrenalin) in severe reactions. Supplementing with herbs, medicinal mushrooms, and other natural health products effectively promotes an appropriate immune response and soothe allergy symptoms.

Capsaicin: Nasal Relief for Rhinitis Symptoms
Is a well-known allergy treatment and has long been used as a nasal spray to treat rhinitis symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sinus pressure, and post-nasal drip.
Astragalus: Immune-Modulating Benefits For Allergy Relief
Because of its immune-modulating properties, astragalus is ideal for reducing immune hypersensitivity in situations such as allergies. This explains why astragalus is regularly recommended to mitigate common allergy symptoms.
Black Cumin Oil: Natural Relief for Allergy Relief
Offers a broad spectrum of health benefits, including relieving the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Indeed, black cumin seed oil is an effective and natural way to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms, as demonstrated by promising trials.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC): Reducing Oxidative Stress in Allergies
Is known to reduce oxidative stress, which is an important cause of inflammation in allergic diseases like bronchial asthma. As such, NAC supplementation effectively mitigates the allergic response and the intensity of symptoms.
Probiotics: Modulating Immune Response to Allergens
Research tells us that probiotics may play an important role in preventing and treating various forms of allergy, including allergic rhinitis. Indeed, probiotics have been shown to modulate the body’s immune response, which has an inhibitory effect on allergic reactions to a variety of perceived pathogens.
Pycnogenol: Beneficial Effects on Asthma & Allergies
This has been shown to exert several beneficial effects on asthma and allergic reactions. Studies have shown that pycnogenol supplementation significantly reduced allergic symptoms and improved lung function in those with reduced lung function.
Reishi: Anti-Allergic Properties for Immune Support

Final Thoughts on Common & Seasonal Allergies
Natural health supplements are an incredibly effective way to modulate the body's immune response and reign in allergic symptoms. Those who have not found adequate relief from allergies with natural health products, however, may want to consider allergen immunotherapy (also known as allergy shots) to help improve their tolerance to allergens and reduce the severity of symptoms. Immunotherapy consists of regularly administering a gradually increasing amount of allergen to a patient until a maintenance level is reached. Tolerance for the allergen typically continues after immunotherapy ends – however, the long-term success rate varies from person to person. Consult a qualified immunotherapy specialist to discuss if immunotherapy may be right for you.
