Weight Loss
Although conflicting data has arisen regarding the effica- cy of medium chain triglycerides for weight loss, anec- dotal evidence continues to mount that MCTs are effec- tive for weight loss and athletic performance.
People trying to lose weight find MCT consumption helpful toward the goal of weight loss. Fat molecules are calorically dense and consumption of healthy fats (as a substitute for bad fats) will lead to a feeling of satiation and fullness. Consumption of good fats will allow one to reduce food cravings, feel a sense of fullness, and avoid the accumulation of body fat that is associated with the consumption of bad fats.
MCTs are a good fat source for increasing energy
Because MCT's have shorter chains than long chain triglycerides, MCTs are less calorically dense. This makes them more easily digested than long chain MCTs and also a direct energy source for the body. In this sense, they mimic the function of a carbohydrate.
MCT Oils are a favourite amoung athletes & also helps with weight loss!
Athletes have known for years what many others are just discovering - MCT Oil supplies energy to the muscles, but is not stored as body fat
It's true. Medium chain triglyceride (MCT) Oil is not metabolized by the liver, which means it is quickly metabolized to supply an enormous amount of power for hard workouts, distance and endurance, but without weight gain.
These special MCTs are fatty acids which are unique in the way they are metabolized and valuable to those con- scious of body weight and ability. However, this does not mean one should substitute MCT Oil for other valuable and healthy Omega 3 oils, such as unrefined flax seed, hemp, pumpkin or walnut oil. Both MCT Oil and Coconut Oil, which is naturally high in MCTs, have absolutely none of the Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids.
It's interesting to note that athletes on a very low calorie diet restricting carbohydrates, or on a ketogenic or ana- bolic diet, often take 20 ml (2 Tbsp) MCT Oil a day. With this very small amount of MCT Oil, the body increases heat production (thermogenesis) by an incredible 40 percent! This means that the body burns a whole lot more calories with the added intake of MCT Oil.
In fact, combining a low carbohydrate diet with an intake of just 20ml MCT Oil a day tricks the body into burning more calories than consumed. In addition, with this MCT know-how one can also avoid the harmful effects of yo- yo dieting, which results in regaining the weight lost on a diet many times over.
Adding 20 ml MCT oil to your daily meals can be done in a number of different ways. For instance, try the following delicious and healthy promoting recipes.
What the heck is MCT-Oil?
In short: It's a Healing Oil
MCT simply stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides. They are fatty acids extracted from palm or coconut oil. MCT's have medicinal value.Capric and caprylic acids are medium chain fatty acids, which have a positive effect in feeding brain cells. Dr. Mary Newport MD uses the 60/40 formula in Alpha Supreme MCT-Oil successfully in an Alzheimer's case study. Other benefits of MCT's are increased fat metabo- lism for weight loss and for muscle building.
Medium chain fatty acids
We are now much more educated about the severe health risks associated with consumption of trans fats, and how some saturated fat in our diets can actually improve our overall health. We also know more about the specific fatty acids in coconut oil, namely lauric acid and capric acid, both medium chain fatty acids (MCFA's). MCFA's contain 6-10 carbons, compared to long chain fatty acids, which contain 10+.
Medium chain fatty acids differ significantly from their longer chained counterparts and may be a more fat friendly, abundant, rapidly used and available source of energy. Another bonus to using MCFA's for energy is that, when compared to carbohydrates, MCFA's do not have a stimulatory effect on insulin levels. Studies are now showing that coconut oil may be useful in controlling weight gain and obesity, thanks to its lauric acid component. Lauric acid makes up the largest proportion of saturdated fat in coconut oil. Lauric acid has been shown to increase HDL cholesterol (the 'good' cholesterol) in the body, creating a more favourable cholesterol profile.
Coconut oil and Alzheimer's
Research devoted to the use of coconut oil for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease is also showing a lot of promise. One hypothesis in Alzheimer's development is that the symptom's are a result of the starvation of the brain cells, which are, for whatever reason, unable to process glucose. A diet higher in MCFA's provides the brain with ketones for energy and nourishment, instead of glucose. Regular consumption of non-hydrogenated coconut oil, being a natural source of these MCFA's has been shown to halt signs of atrophy in the brain and improve cognitive function and mood in Alzheimer's patients. Further studies need to be conducted to assess how accurate and universal these finding are.
More great reasons to incorporate more coconut oil into your diet!
- MCFA's have also been used widely in the treatment of malabsorption pathologies, such as pancreatitis, Crohn's, celiac's, and cystic fibrosis, showing a huge benefit over low fat diets in terms of maintaining adequate nutrition and weight.
- They have been found to aid in the digestion, absorption and transport of lipids.
- Coconut oil may be effective for the treatment of gallstones or prevention of gallstone in individuals who are susceptible.
- Works well as a moisturizer, applied directly to the skin as needed.
- Another great benefit of coconut oil is its ability to withstand high heats, while still retaining the health benefits of its fatty acids. It is one of the 'healthier' oils to fry with, if you must fry with oil.

MCT Lauric acid fights Candida and more
Dr. Jon Kabara, Professor for Pharmacology and Biochemistry at the University of Detroit and Michigan State University, did a wonderful thing when he discovered lauric acid. This unique 12-carbon MCT, found in coconut oil, proved to be a most effective, safe and natural antifungal.
More than 50 percent of the fatty acids in coconuts are made up of lauric acid. Once ingested, lauric acid is converted into another form called monolaurin, which has additional health benefits is an antibacterial, antiviral, and antiproto- zoal. The human body can use this sub- stance to destroy lipid coated viruses such as HIV, herpes, influenza, and various pathogenic bacteria including the heli- cobacter pylori that causes stomach ulcers.
In fact, it was the discovery of lauric acid that led to the development of the drug-like natural antibiotic product Lauricidin, an effective treatment for Candida albicans, which is a systemic yeast infection both women and men can suffer with. This treatment is avail- able in health food stores.
MCT-Oil for endurance
The sports nutrition field has been quick to realize the value in substituting MCT- Oil for other dietary fats and oils. It has quickly become a favourite, instant fuel and energy source for many athletes, including marathon runners and others who participate in endurance sports.
For those athletes who find it difficult to consume sufficient total energy, con- sumption of 2 to 3 tablespoons (30 to 45 grams) of MCT-Oil may prove to be beneficial. MCT-Oil is burned differently than other fats, so taking this small amount is a good way to ensure that athletes can meet their needs. Consult your physical trainer or other natural health professional for specific guidance.
Where does one find such a safe and seemingly miraculous oil? MCT-Oil is now available in many health food stores, and because it is saturated, it is stable and has a long shelf life.
MCT-Oil
a Boon for Diabetics
In our society where type 2 diabetes is now an epidemic we know a lot about control- ling blood sugar levels with daily insulin shots. What most people don't know, unfor- tunately, is that with the help of specific types of fatty acids, medium chain triglyc- erides (MCTs) diabetes can be prevented in the first place. If diabetes is already an issue, MCTs can help prevent some of the many complications that come with it.
High blood pressure, stroke, heart ailments, hearing loss, and amputations are all possi- ble complications from diabetes that can lead to extremely ill health and early death. Diabetes itself is usually caused by too much intake of simple carbohydrates, which is why diabetics need to restrict their intake of sugar and starch.
Sugar turns into glucose and requires insulin to enter the cells. If this doesn't happen, as is the case in diabetes, the glucose becomes body fat, making blood vessels narrower and causing an interruption in blood circulation. This is why numbness in the feet (neuropa- thy) is a common complication of diabetes.
The MCTs in coconut oil, or MCT-Oil, do not require insulin because they easily pass through the cell's membrane. Bruce Fife, who is a respected naturopathic doctor and author of a number of books about coconut oil, states, "Not only are MCTs in coconut oil able to feed the cells without the need of insulin, they also help improve insulin secretion insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance."
One important factor that research has con- cluded and is extremely relevant for diabet- ics is the need to drastically reduce the intake of Omega 6 seed oils (sunflower, saf- flower, soy and canola) to less than 2 per- cent of total fat intake, replacing them with MCTs. Coconut oil may therefore be the best fat for diabetics. - They have been found to aid in the digestion, absorption and transport of lipids.
