Tyrosine, What Is It?
If you’re struggling with stress, low mood, and symptoms of a sluggish metabolism, you may need a little adrenal and thyroid support and Tyrosine may be able to help.
Tyrosine (or L-Tyrosine) is one of the 20 amino acids. Though it isn’t considered to be an essential amino acid, because it can be synthesized in our bodies, it is essential in the production of key neurotransmitters; dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine, as well as central nervous system and healthy mood balance.
Tyrosine is also a precursor to the thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which are responsible for healthy thyroid function and the maintenance of metabolism and energy. While it can be found in foods such as; dairy, meat, poultry and fish, a tyrosine supplement will ensure that enough thyroxine is produced to support optimal thyroid function. This is especially important because low thyroid function is rampant throughout the world, affecting an estimated 200 million people, according to the Thyroid Foundation of Canada. Low thyroid can cause a whole host of symptoms including sluggish metabolism, fatigue, cold sensitivity, weight gain, constipation, moodiness and decreased cognitive and physical performance.
Being under stress depletes certain neurotransmitters. In such instances, supplementation may also support neurotransmitter balance and could enhance mood, boost brain function and memory and decrease mental and physical fatigue. Tyrosine can also balance the adrenal glands, which is especially useful for those under chronic stress, because the adrenals are responsible for the production of stress hormones.
Benefits of Tyrosine
- Essential for Healthy Mood Balance
- Optimizes Adrenal Function
- Stimulates Production of Thyroid Hormones
Who Needs Tyrosine?
This supplement may be helpful if you are under intense stress or struggling with symptoms of low thyroid (weight gain, fatigue, constipation), or if you need central nervous system support (lack of motivation, low mood, and decreased cognitive and physical performance).
Tyrosine Supplements
Potencies
There is no set dosage for tyrosine; however, a standard dose range of 100-150 mg per kg of body weight is usually recommended. Speak to your health care practitioner for the optimal dose range for you.
Forms
L-Tyrosine supplements come either from animal or fermented vegan sources and are available either as a free-form amino acid – L-tyrosine – or N-acetyl L-tyrosine (NALT). While NALT is more water-soluble, it has a low conversion rate; therefore, requires a higher dose.
Formats
These supplements are available in capsules, tablets and powder form, and are often added to workout supplements. It should be taken on an empty stomach away from food, to not interfere with its absorption. Because it stimulates energy, it’s best taken in the morning.
When taking this nutrient for mood or stress support, combining it with vitamin B6, folate and copper will optimize its conversion into neurotransmitters.
For thyroid support, consider taking Tyrosine along with Selenium or Zinc for an increase in thyroid hormone support.
Side Effects & Contraindications
While tyrosine is safe for most people to use on a daily basis, it can pose some concerns for certain people.Tyrosine is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation. Tyrosine may increase blood pressure and can cause sleep difficulties in some people. If you have a diagnosed thyroid disorder or are taking thyroid medication, dopamine or other psychoactive medications speak to your health care practitioner before taking tyrosine.
