What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a extracted from the seeds of the African Plant,Griffionia simplicifolia. 5-HTP is a metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan. It is a direct precursor of the important inhibitory neurotransmitter serotonin, which is secreted in response to mood or emotion swings. 5-HTP has been favorably compared to tricyclic antidepressants and Prozac for its ability to alleviate depression.
What is Serotonin?
Serotonin is a major player in the regulation of mood and behaviour. It also regulates appetite, the dilation of blood vessels and many other body processes Serotonin soothes and calms and brings about feelings of contentment. Serotonin regulates mood, behaviour, appetite, dilation of blood vessels and many other body processes. Serotonin is released in response to fullness and regulates appetite. Deficiency of serotonin can lead to overeating and obesity. This also accounts for the fact that when we are under stress our appetite tends to change.
Some people become deficient in serotonin and gain weight because they overeat. Others lose their appetite partly because their brain is reacting to high levels of serotonin released during the stressful time. Serotonin also decreases the diameter of blood vessels. This is helpful in headaches and migraines that are caused by increased blood flow in the brain.
To enhance the body's production of serotonin without taking serotonin itself there are several options. Protein intake is important because it contains the amino acid tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin. A supplement called 5-HTP is an activated form of tryptophan that can also be supplemented to help with the production of serotonin. Vitamin B6, pyridoxine, acts in the cascade to produce serotonin, from tryptophan. The absorption of B6 is improved if all of the B complex vitamins are taken along with it. Supplementing with 5-HTP may benefit:
There are few available formulations of two or more ingredients that fit exactly what content and dosage I have found to be effective for me so I was very happy to have discovered this one and have been taking it for more than a year now. I found I needed the higher 5-HTP dosage included and the 250 mg l-tyrosine augments the separate 2 x 500 mg doses I still take separately and seems to assist just that much more with pain relief overnight. In combination with a melatonin immediate and sustained release combo caplet I get a better nights sleep with this easy-to-tolerate supplement.

Tyrosine + 5HTP Has a lot of potential
First the basic about my condition as expected depression lack of pleasure in life etc all due to being social phobic... Now recently it has been almost proven that people with social phobia have low serotonin and low dopamine and very low Dopamine D2 receptors. Stress hormones are depleted and are made of dopamine which is also depleted..
So instead of waiting confirmed tests results about taking those nutrients I decided to do it myself. Here are the results:
Taking one pill a day did 4 things to me at first right now I am taking 2 pills but will eventually raise the dose although I will first talk to my doctor to prevent overdose..
First heat... Yes 2 hours after taking my first tyrosine pill I felt like I was cooking inside an oven... Well serotonin has an impact on body temperature and so at least it proves that it works... :)
Second food... Yes you are hungry... a lot..:) For 2 years I really wasnt hungry about eating mainly doing it because Im supposed too... But after taking a few pills for a few days Im waking up in the morning not because Im supposed to but because Im _very_ hungry... Again another proof that I have problems with those neurotransmitters...
Third pleasure...Ok not very much but there are things I was doing in the past that I liked alot not anymore but now Im slowly getting more pleasure doing those things again..
Fourth locomotion.. Playing with my brother on his PlayStation 3 and for those who know what I mean youre supposed to press buttons relatively fast and moving around with your gun and shooting and youre supposed to be fast.. When youre low in dopamine it affect your response time and it showed... Now I react _much_ faster not only due to the fast muscle reaction but to the overall effect in your mind... This is probably because there are bigger things happening in your brain when you have low serotonin and dopamine... Stress goes down a little you have clarity in your head and all this improve your mental state...
So overall as surprising as it might be it works it does show you that you lack those 2 neurotransmitters at the very least. It probably wont be enough to make you a better person thats why Im also meeting a psychologist to change my old behavior about life but if you want to make the same test I did all I can say is that it showed me for real that I have neurotransmitter problems and therefore I can work on re balancing my brain chemicals a little better each day...
