The immune system is your body's most important line of defense against infection and disease. It is a highly complex system composed mostly of a variety of different types of white blood cells, whose job it is to detect and eliminate abnormal cells and invading pathogens like bacteria and viruses. It is obvious that maintaining a strong, healthy immune system is extremely important.
Many natural substances have been shown to help boost the immune system in various ways, helping the body to fight off infections and eliminate potentially cancerous cells more effectively. This clinically proven complex includes four well-established medicinal mushroom species [Maitake (Grifola frondosa), Shitake (Lentinula edodes), Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), and Brazilian (Agaricus Blazei)] as well as three other plant-based immune modulators for superior immune support [rice bran (Oryza sativa), olive leaf (Olea europaea), and wild yam (Dioscorea villosa)]. Scientific studies have shown that each of these ingredients is a potent modulator of the immune system. Combined together they form a powerful, reliable, highly bioavailable formula that helps the body defend itself from infection.
In vitro studies have shown that ImmuNutrinTM significantly increases the activity of immune system cells called macrophages. Macrophages are cells that engulf invaders through a process called phagocytosis. Following one hour of incubation with ImmuNutrinTM macrophage activity increased by 65%. Previous studies have also shown that the -glucans in mushrooms are capable of activating dormant macrophages.
Human trials have also shown promising results. In one open-label study involving 18 subjects, 2 months of supplementation with 1000mg daily of ImmuNutrinTM resulted in an 18% increase in immune cell levels. This increase was observed for nearly all types of immune system cells, with natural killer cells, helper T cells, cytotoxic T cells, and B cells all increasing by at least 10%. Furthermore, 16 of 18 subjects reported no symptoms of viral or bacterial infection throughout the study. In a follow-up study, five subjects were given 3000mg of ImmuNutrinTM per day. After two weeks, the subjects' levels of natural killer cells had increased by 19% and natural killer cell activity, or cytotoxicity, had increased by 17%.
Botanical Ingredients
In addition to the ImmuNutrinTM blend, AOR's Immune Support also contains three herbs with a long history of use for immune system support. Modern research has also demonstrated these herbs' immunomodulatory actions. They include Androgrpahis paniculata, Amla (Emblica officinalis) and Holy Basil (Occimum sanctum).
Andrographis paniculata is commonly used in Scandinavia as a cold and flu remedy. It is also used in traditional Ayurvedic, Thai and Chinese medicine to treat fevers associated with infection. In vitro and animal studies have shown that Andrographis possesses anti-inflammatory, fever reducing, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-malaria and immune system stimulating properties.
In humans, Andrographis has been studied for its ability to treat and prevent cold and flu infections. At least seven placebo-controlled clinical trials, including a total of over 800 patients, have been conducted with Andrographis paniculata, and have shown very positive results. In one trial 208 men and women with upper respiratory tract infections were give 60 mg of Andrographis or a placebo per day. Following just two days of supplementation, symptoms of sore throat, fatigue, sleep disturbance and nasal secretion were significantly improved compared to the placebo group. Similar results have been obtained in many other studies.
Emblica officinalis, or Amla, is an ayurvedic herb used in the treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, high cholesterol levels, infections, and ulcers. Amla is also known as an effective antimicrobial agent and immune system enhancer. In vitro studies have revealed that amla offers cytotoxic protection at the cellular level. It does so by reducing both the immunosuppressive and free radical activity of toxic heavy metals in addition to significantly enhancing the survival and activity of macrophages. Amla have also shown promising anti-cancer properties. In one trial where rats were administered with N- nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) to induce visible liver tumours, and only 11% of the animals treated with amla developed such tumours.
Ocimum sanctum, or Holy Basil, is another herb with potent immunomodulatory, antimicrobial and anti-parasitic activity. It has been shown to eliminate the bacterial species Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus pumilus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro. The active compounds in the plant are also effective in killing the parasite Leishmania and the parasite that causes malaria (plasmodium). Animal studies suggest that holy basil is an effective immune-system modulator, helping to promote a healthy immune response.
Holy Basil also helps to reduce anxiety, stress, and inflammation. Maintaining healthy stress levels is important for preventing imbalances of the immune system. Exposure to short term stress can put the immune system into overdrive, potentially leading to damaging inflammation, while chronic stress can suppress the immune system. Holy Basil can help to prevent this response.
