Camphor Oil Benefits
Did you know that camphor is the most significant ingredient in Vick's Vapour Rub – a mentholated salve that's been around for over 125 years? Indeed, camphor has been used in folk medicine for centuries and was even used in ancient Sumatra to treat sprains, swellings, and inflammation. It was also used extensively in Europe between 1347 and 1351 to combat Black Death (or the Plague). Today camphor oil is used above and beyond anything else as a powerful decongestant and for respiratory system support.
Camphor oil is extracted from the wood of the camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) laurel – a large evergreen tree native to Taiwan, China, and Japan. The oil is alternately described as having a scent that is bright and piercing or fresh, intense, and woody; it is also decidedly reminiscent of eucalyptus thanks to its high cineole content. Camphor oil's lasting aroma is known to promote fuller and deeper breathing. This is why it is so frequently used in vapour rubs to relieve a congested respiratory system by thoroughly clearing the lungs. Camphor oil, however, also boasts multiple other potent therapeutic properties. Below are some of the most well-documented benefits this oil offers.
Benefits Of Camphor Essential Oil
- Analgesic
- Decongestant

- Promotes Skin Health
- Protects Against Contagious Viruses
Camphor Oil - Therapeutic Properties & Uses
Camphor essential oil has traditionally been prized for its dual cooling and warming effects. Camphor oil is to be used topically and blended in a carrier oil such as, Sweet Almond, Coconut, Grape Seed etc. It can then be applied to the skin to soothe rashes, a skin infection, eczema, psoriasis, acne, and fungal skin infections, including athlete's foot and ringworm.
Camphor oil is also great for use via steam inhalation when added to an essential oil diffuser, vaporizer, or humidifier, to help relieve a congested respiratory system by clearing the lungs and addressing symptoms of bronchitis and pneumonia. This application also helps clear up sinus infections, as well as help boost circulation, digestion, immunity, and relaxation.
Using Essential Oils
Before heading to the store or hitting up your favourite online supplement retailer, it's important to know that camphor oil comes in four distinct colours:
White – This is the only type used in aromatic and therapeutic applications. However; despite the name, white camphor is actually clear or very slightly milky in colour.
Brown and yellow – Both of these are toxic and contain high concentrations of safrole, a plant compound that is a hepatocarcinogen (carcinogenic to the liver).
Blue – Another toxic colour grade.
Camphor essential oil works synergistically and blends exceptionally well with chamomile, lavender, oregano, rosemary, tea tree, thyme, and wintergreen oils.
