Citronella oil has long been used in culinary and medicinal applications in China, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. It was and is still a common flavouring agent and can help soothe pain, infections, rashes, and all sorts of inflammatory conditions. Moreover, this oil is a commonly used ingredient in natural cleaning products, perfume fragrances, aromatherapy candles, and cosmetics.
Benefits of Citronella Essential Oil
- Effective Insect Repellant
- Protects against free radical damage
- Lifts Moods
- Encourages wound healing
- Treats Fungal and Parasitic Infections
Therapeutic Properties of Citronella Essential Oil
Citronella oil is prized for its cleansing, disinfecting, freshening, and deodorizing properties. It is a safe and effective alternative to DEET on camping trips, hiking trips, and summers at the cottage to mask the body's natural fragrances and keep mosquitoes and other insects away. Citronella is also remarkable for use in a diffuser or room spray to kill harmful airborne bacteria while freshening the air and imparting a vibrant aroma. The oil is additionally recognized for its ability to lift moods, relax the body, and help us better handle stress. In topical application, diluted in the carrier oil you prefer (I love sweet almond oil), citronella is excellent for soothing sore muscles and calming cramps and spasms. It is also very effective at easing headaches and boosting energy. Moreover, this oil offers robust skin health benefits and can expertly soothe inflammation, irritation, and myriad other skin conditions.
Using Citronella In Aromatherapy
Like many other essential oils, citronella is only appropriate for external use. Pregnant and nursing women should not use citronella oil, as it is believed to possibly affect hormone balance, and it is likewise not recommended for use in children.
Because this oil can potentially cause skin reactions, doing a skin test before using the oil is a good idea. This can be done by diluting 1 drop of citronella oil in 4 drops of the carrier oil of your choosing (sweet almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, or others) and applying a dime-sized amount to a small area of skin that is not sensitive—for instance, the forearm.
Citronella oil must never be used near the eyes, inner nose, ears, or on any other particularly sensitive areas of skin. Side effects associated with citronella oil include dermatitis, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, irritation, nausea, seizures, and vomiting.
