What Is Geranium Oil?

Geranium essential oil is extracted via steam distillation from the flowers and leaves of Pelargonium graveolens, a plant species native to South Africa. The ancient Egyptians revered geranium for its ability to promote beautiful, radiant skin and improve overall complexion. Aromatically speaking, geranium oil is very strong and dominant, with distinctly rosy-floral notes. The oil is widely used in fragrances and cosmetics (for face, body, and hair care). Geranium Oil Benefits

Geranium essential oil is extracted via steam distillation from the flowers and leaves of Pelargonium graveolens, a plant species native to South Africa. The ancient Egyptians revered geranium for its ability to promote beautiful, radiant skin and improve overall complexion.

Aromatically speaking, this oil is very strong and dominant, with distinctly rosy-floral notes. The oil is widely used in fragrances and cosmetics (for face, body, and hair care). From a fragrance standpoint, it pairs exceptionally well with Bergamot, Citronella, Fennel, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Orange, Patchouli, Peppermint, Rose Absolute, Sandalwood, and Ylang Ylang.

In addition to its use in perfumery, geranium oil offers robust medicinal properties. It is commonly referred to as the "female oil" because it supports the female reproductive system, including the menstrual cycle and the transition to menopause (and associated symptoms). However, this oil's health benefits do not end there; read on to learn more about what geranium oil can do for you.

Benefits of Geranium Essential Oil

Therapeutic Properties of Geranium Essential Oil

In addition to supporting hormone balance and the female system, studies have shown that geranium oil possesses potent antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, and astringent properties. These properties make it ideal for promoting skin health, reducing acne breakouts, soothing skin irritation, treating wounds, cuts, and burns, and soothing dermatitis, eczema, and skin infections when applied topically (diluted in a carrier oil). As an astringent, geranium oil is also fantastic as an anti-aging treatment to help prevent and fade fine lines and wrinkles and illuminate the complexion. Other common uses for geranium include alleviating muscle aches and pains, fighting bacterial and fungal infections, protecting against neuro-inflammation and neurocognitive diseases, soothing pain (especially pain associated with herpes virus infections), and reducing the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Using Essential Oils

If you want to try Geranium oil, you'll most likely come across "Rose Geranium," a geranium plant with rose-scented leaves. This species of Geranium is native to certain parts of Africa. Both geranium oils have similar compositions and therapeutic properties, so you can easily opt for rose geranium if the sweeter, more floral fragrance is a better fit for you.

Geranium oil can be diffused or diluted with carrier oil and used topically. It can be used as a spot treatment for acne or other skin conditions or in massage therapy. The oil is also a great addition to DIY skin and hair care recipes, especially when added to conditioner to treat dry hair and stubborn dandruff.

Because geranium oil affects hormone balance, it is inappropriate for use during pregnancy or lactation.
