Lemongrass Oil Benefits
Lemongrass goes by different names depending on the country of origin; these include cymbopogon, barbed wire grass, silky heads, Cochin grass, Malabar grass, oily heads, citronella grass, and fever grass. Regardless of the origin, lemongrass is a genus of Asian, African, Australian, and tropical island plants belonging to the grass (Poaceae) family; it is a genus of about 55 species of grasses. Food-grade lemongrass can be used in culinary or lemongrass essential oil can be used for medicinal applications, or in perfumery.
The oil extracted from lemongrass has a fresh, light, slightly lemony aroma with distinctly earthy and herbaceous undertones. The scent is powerful but not overpowering; used in diffusion, this oil is bright, stimulating, and refreshing and can help boost energy without being too heavy or intense. It is the perfect oil to diffuse into your space when you want to feel awake and remain alert. Alternately, a few drops of lemongrass oil added to a carrier oil like jojoba, coconut, or olive oil and massaged into the skin provides relaxing, soothing, and balancing effects and can ease sore and achy muscles and joints. Lemongrass essential oil is not typically recommended for internal use unless you're following the advice of an experienced aromatherapist.

Therapeutic Properties of Lemongrass Essential Oil
Lemongrass possesses antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal, antiseptic, anxiolytic, and anti-inflammatory effects. It also offers robust astringent and skin-healing properties, so it is ideal for promoting optimal skin health, clearing up the complexion, and soothing inflammatory skin conditions. It's also perfect for preventing the growth of bacteria and yeast and is a great choice to alleviate muscle aches, pain associated with arthritis, menstrual cramps, and migraine headaches. Lemongrass oil is also frequently recommended in aromatherapy to soothe digestive problems ranging from stomach aches to gastric ulcers. It's also ideal for calming diarrhea and helping prevent associated dehydration. Like most essential oils, lemongrass has several different uses, including treating athlete's foot and ringworm, relieving symptoms of stress and anxiety, and reducing fever.
Using Essential Oils
Lemongrass oil pairs well with basil, bergamot, black pepper, cedarwood, clary sage, fennel, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, orange, rosemary, tea tree, thyme, and ylang-ylang.
Lemongrass essential oil is highly concentrated, so it should always be used in diluted form in water for use in a diffuser or in a carrier oil for topical application when used in skincare or massage. While lemongrass is generally well-tolerated, it may cause allergic skin reactions in certain individuals. Moreover, those with sensitive systems may occasionally develop side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, increased appetite, and increased urination. In such instances, discontinue use.
