Mandarin Oil Benefits
Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) is a small tree from the Rutaceae family. It's natively from South East Asia (primarily China and Vietnam), though today it is also grown in Spain, Italy, Brazil, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mexico, and the US. The mandarin fruit is a distinct species of orange with a flavour that is sweeter and stronger than the typical orange, which is why it’s essential oil offers a sweeter smell than orange.
The mandarin tree is cultivated first and foremost for its fruit- though essential oil is also extracted from the outer rind through a cold-pressing process. The oil is often described as having the sweetest aroma of all of the citrus oils and gives off a medium-strength sweet, citrusy, fruity, and slightly floral scent that is refreshing and lends itself exceptionally well to perfumery and cosmetics uses.
There are a few distinctions when it comes to mandarin oil. Red mandarin essential oil comes from the rinds of fully ripened fruit, whereas green mandarin oil comes from unripened fruit. Despite the colour difference and a slight variation in aroma, both mandarin oils offer similar health benefits. Also worth noting is that, unlike other citrus oils, mandarin oil is not stimulating but rather very soothing and perfect in diffusion for calming the nervous system.
