Nutmeg Oil Benefits
Did you know that the evergreen nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) is native to the Banda Islands in Indonesia and is the source of two popular spices, nutmeg and mace? Indeed, the nutmeg tree produces fruits that, once ripe, reveal an aril known as mace, and inside this aril is a nut we call nutmeg. Ground nutmeg has a distinctively spicy fragrance and a slightly sweet taste. It is frequently used to flavour dishes like baked goods, confections, potatoes, meats, sausages, sauces, and vegetables, and is a hallmark of eggnog. The nutmeg tree is also a source of essential oil.
This essential oil is made via steam distillation, which boasts potent stimulating and sedative properties. Chemically speaking, nutmeg essential oil contains high amounts of monoterpenes as well as, to a lesser extent, ethers (myristicin and safrole) and phenols (methyeugenol).
The presence of these compounds is why consuming nutmeg powder in quantities greater than what would typically be found in recipes can cause allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, and psychoactive effects. Paradoxically, these same compounds impart nutmeg oil with considerable health benefits.

Nutmeg Essential Oil Therapeutic Properties
Nutmeg essential oil is energizing, stimulating, and warming when applied topically with a carrier oil; it is said to help with digestive issues such as GI spasms, nausea, and upset stomach. Nutmeg essential oil is also ideal for soothing muscular aches and pains, including rheumatism, arthritis, muscle injury, and overuse. It is also remarkably effective at lowering blood pressure, easing symptoms of stress, anxiety, low mood, and insomnia, and relieving menstrual cramps, nervousness, and tension.
Using Essential Oils
Aromatically speaking, nutmeg oil is reminiscent of gingerbread cookies. It has a sweet, warm, soft, and spicy fragrance that is also somewhat woody. It pairs well with other spice oils such as cinnamon, clove, orange, and vanilla, as well as with floral, citrus, and wood scents. Nutmeg also lends itself beautifully to perfumery, where it can add a little spice to lighter blends.
Nutmeg oil can be added to your favourite carrier oil and massaged into sore and aching muscles or onto the tummy for instant relief from all sorts of gastrointestinal complaints such as gas, bloating, flatulence, indigestion, constipation, and diarrhea. You can also diffuse nutmeg oil, alongside lavender, orange, or any other citrus oil you like, to create a warm, soothing, and relaxing ambiance.
