Tangerine Essential Oil

Did you know that the tangerine is closely related to the mandarin, both of which belong to the same species – Citrus reticulata? Perhaps better described as a "mandarin variety," the tangerine (Citrus tangerina) gets its name from Tangier, a Moroccan port city on the Strait of Gibraltar. Indeed, while tangerines were first cultivated in the Americas (Florida), they are said to have been imported from Tangier. While you may enjoy the tangerine fruit for a healthy snack, tangerine essential oil is great to diffuse for its energizing aroma.

Tangerines are smaller, sweeter, and less sour than the classic orange. Nutritionally speaking, tangerines are made up of roughly 85% water, 13% carbs, and little to no fat or protein. They are also a rich source of vitamin C and other powerful antioxidants. Tangerine essential oil is a favourite among citrus oils. It boasts a tangy, fresh, sweet, citrusy fragrance similar to other citrus oils but with a more concentrated, intense aroma.

Tangerine oil blends well with various other oils in aromatherapy and perfumery. It may be combined with warm, spicy oils like cinnamon and clove and with other citrus oils like bergamot, lemon, or lime for a bright, uplifting aroma. The tanginess of tangerine oil also lends itself well to combinations that include mint, peppermint, or spearmint.

Benefits of Tangerine Essential Oil

Therapeutic Properties of Tangerine Essential Oil

Tangerine oil, like other citrus oils, can be used via inhalation or in a diffuser, diluted with a carrier oil and applied topically via massage or in skincare. It can also be added to a spray bottle full of water and spritzed to clean, disinfect, and deodorize the house (carpets, curtains, couches, linens, countertops, etc.).

The oil is also excellent for bolstering immune function when inhaled and helping fend off infections. This oil also helps clear lung congestion, soothe muscle aches and pains, promotes optimal digestive health, treats symptoms of digestive upset such as gas, flatulence, and constipation, stimulates detoxification, relieves fatigue, and boosts energy. Tangerine oil is also great for helping feelings of anxiety and irritability. In skin care applications, tangerine oil is phenomenal at helping rid the skin of impurities and stimulating lymphatic drainage.

Using Aromatherapy Oils

As a citrus, tangerine oil can cause phototoxicity in certain individuals, so it's wise to refrain from direct sun exposure for 6–12 hours after applying it to the skin. However, tangerine oil is generally well tolerated and is non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing.

If you're looking to try tangerine oil, look for one that clearly states it is 100% pure essential oil, not an extract, and that it is free from additives of any kind.
