White Thyme Oil

The thyme shrub is a small flowering botanical belonging to the Lamiaceae family and the genus Thymus, of which there are over 350 species. Thyme is indigenous to the Mediterranean, and "garden thyme," Thymus vulgaris, is a common culinary herb used both fresh and dried. Thyme Vulgaris is also used to make thyme essential oil, one of the most potent used in aromatherapy

This oil is extracted from both the leaves and flowers of Thymus vulgaris via steam distillation. The first distillation yields "red thyme essential oil," a dark reddish-brown oil with a decidedly spicy fragrance. Red thyme oil, which is usually used in perfumery, has a higher concentration of active compounds and should be diluted with care when used.

If red thyme oil is filtered and distilled a second time, this yields a gold-to-pale yellow oil. This is referred to as "white thyme essential oil," and it is the most commonly used form of thyme oil in aromatherapy. White thyme is safer than red thyme since it has a lower concentration of phenols.

Benefits of White Thyme Essential Oil

Therapeutic Properties of White Thyme Essential Oil

White thyme has many potential uses, cosmetics being a major one thanks to its beneficial properties, including: antioxidant, anti-acne, cleansing, clarifying, detoxifying, anti-aging, firming, soothing, and stimulating properties. White thyme also offers several medicinal properties, these include antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antispasmodic, expectorant, antitussive, analgesic, stimulant, insecticidal, emmenagogue, regulating, and stress-relieving. It may be used aromatically directly from the bottle, added to a diffuser, or diluted in a carrier oil like sweet almond, coconut, or jojoba and applied topically. White thyme is also a great addition to skincare products. It can relieve minor skin irritations and inflammatory skin conditions and is ideal for balancing oil production, treating acne breakouts, and resolving eczema and psoriasis. Because of its antimicrobial properties, white thyme is also excellent for treating cuts, scrapes, and sunburns.

Using Aromatherapy Oils

White thyme oil has an intensely fresh, spicy, herbaceous scent reminiscent of the fresh herb. It has a far less intense aroma than red thyme oil. It may be paired with other oils such as bergamot, cinnamon, clary sage, eucalyptus, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, marjoram, myrrh, oregano, pine, rosemary, tea tree, and wintergreen. It's important to note that some essential oils are toxic to pets whether diffused in the home or if they ingest them from licking your skin.
