Ayurvedic Medicine

Did you know that Ayurveda is considered to be the oldest of the healing sciences? Indeed, Ayurveda is a centuries-old healing system that dates back roughly 5000 years, starting with the Vedic culture of India. Ayurveda is still alive and well today and is practised throughout the world. Ayurvedic medicine is a system of medicine that is based on the premise that there are three doshas/life forces (or energies):

  • Vata
  • Pitta
  • Kapha

Ayurvedic medicine aims to preserve health and wellness by maintaining a balance between mind, body, and spirit and preventing disease rather than treating it. Indeed, Ayurveda dictates that disease and illness are born out of an imbalance in the three energies and a disconnect from nature. As an integral part of complementary and alternative medicine, Ayurveda aims to rebalance the body, mind, spirit, and environment.

Ayurvedic Medicine uses various treatment modalities on a person-by-person basis, according to their health status, symptoms, and health goals. Therapies used include herbal medicine (or phytotherapy), special diets, meditation, yoga, massage, laxatives, enemas, medicinal oils (or essential oils), and others. Ayurvedic preparations are typically based on complex herbal compounds, spices, minerals, and metals.

Key Benefits of Ayurvedic Health Supplements

Who Needs Ayurvedic Medicine?

Some well-known and widely used Ayurvedic dietary supplements include Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Boswellia, Triphala, Brahmi, Manjistha, Cumin, Turmeric, Ajwain, Licorice Root, Gotu Kola, Bitter Melon, Cardamom, and Neem.

Research has shown that Ayurvedic medicine can be safely and effectively used to treat various health conditions, including: mood disorders and anxiety, asthma, neurocognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson’s disease, dysmenorrhea, and other hormone-associated conditions, including perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, PMS, and cramps, as well as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Ayurvedic complexes are also highly beneficial for stress overload and burnout, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, skin conditions including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and others, and chronic digestive issues including constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Final Thoughts on Ayurvedic Medicine and Supplements

Ayurveda believes that everyone has some Vata, Pitta, and Kapha in their personality, but one or two of the doshas are typically more dominant in each person. This dominance is what ultimately governs body type, appetite, energy, mood, and behaviour. Each dosha has physical and emotional characteristics, and Ayurvedic complexes are designed to help address (or, more precisely, redress) energy imbalances.

If you aren’t familiar with Ayurvedic medicine but are looking to buy ayurvedic supplements, make sure to speak with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before selecting supplements and complexes, as they will be better able to guide you toward the most suitable blends for you.
