Advantages of Liquid/Powder Supplements

One of the main reasons I recommend a liquid or powder as opposed to tablet or capsule is really based on dosage. In some cases the difference in dosage per teaspoon versus per capsule is quite great. For items that often require a high potency to get the most therapeutic benefit, or for supplements that are heavier and difficult to get in a capsule, liquid and powders do have their advantages. For example, I will often recommend a liquid fish oil versus a capsule simply because I think it simplifies things. In my opinion, it is EASIER to take 2 teaspoons of something versus 6 -8 capsules per day. Calcium and Iron are two great examples of supplements that are heavy and can be difficult to fit into capsule from and because of this often contain a less than optimum dosage per cap. Again, in this case, there may be a benefit in terms of simplicity, to take these supplements in liquid or powder form. A scoop of powder mixed into juice, water or milk of your choice, sounds much simpler to me than its equivalent 10 capsules. In this case a powder is also much more cost effective. There is also flexibility with dosing when taking liquid or powders, if you want to take somewhere between 250 and 500 mg of a substance, you simply add another half teaspoon. This is much harder to do with capsules and impossible to do with softgels or tablets.

There are also a few specific cases, in which a liquid form may be better absorbed. This usually effects individuals with severe malabsorption disorders, such as Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac, Cystic fibrosis, etc. I include the elderly in this category, as well. As we age, the efficiency with which out body produces enzymes, as well as the amount of enzymes that are produced by the stomach, pancreas and intestine are significantly compromised. In these individuals, it may prove beneficial to use a liquid. Less breakdown is needed and this may help to ensure that they are absorbing as much as possible from their supplements.

Sometime swallowing a capsule is also impossible or extremely difficult, as in a small child. For these individuals, of course, a liquid, powder or even chewable table may be necessary.

Vitamins

Vitamin A can also be found in various vegetables, as the carotenes; alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, gamma-carotene; xanthophyll and beta-cryptoxanthin. These are the only carotenes that can be converted via an enzymatic process to Vitamin A. This conversion may be poor in some individuals and some animals (cats) cannot convert carotenes to vitamin A at all.

Vitamin C is the most widely used supplement. Humans cannot manufacture their own vitamin C; therefore it must be taken in through the diet. Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant that is used all over the body. It speeds tissue growth and repair, supports hormone production, increases immune system functioning, protects the body from toxins. It also regulates cholesterol, blood pressure and blood clotting.

The B Vitamins

B1 Thiamine is a water-soluble B vitamin. It is a cofactor in many chemical reactions in the body. Thiamine enhances the circulation of blood to the brain and maintains the function of nerve cells, thus optimizing brain function and learning capacity. Thiamine also forms the blood cells and stomach acid. It helps to regulate muscle activity and ensures proper tone of the digestive tract and heart.

B2 Riboflavin is a water-soluble B vitamin. All of our cells need B2 for cellular respiration and growth because it is a part of the flavin coenzymes. These coenzymes speed up the chemical reactions in the body that are directly responsible for making energy. Riboflavin also helps the body to digest fats, carbohydrates and proteins.

B6 Pyridoxine is a water-soluble B vitamin. There are several forms of B6 including pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. B6 is involved in more body functions than any other single nutrient. It maintains fluid balance in the body, which can be useful for women who experience PMS bloating or individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome. B6 helps to make hemoglobin, the oxygen- carrying component of red blood cells. It is needed to synthesize genetic material and is essential for normal cellular growth.

B12 is a water-soluble B vitamin. Deficiencies of B12 may not be seen for several years because the body can store up to 5 years worth of this vitamin. There are several forms of B12 including cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin. B12 is required in areas where there is high cell turnover, for example the gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow and nervous system. Thus B12 has been used for the treatment of neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis and depression.

Vitamin D Although at one time 400IU was considered appropriate for supplementation, many health care practitioners are now recommending 1000-4000IU/day, with doses as high as 10,000IU/day still being considered safe and necessary depending on the condition and assuming you are under the supervision of a healthcare provider.
