Costa Rica Coffee

The mountainous regions and warm temperatures of Costa Rica provide the ideal terrain and climate to grow high-quality coffee beans. Indeed, one of the principal reasons why Costa Rican coffee is so good is that the soil is enriched by volcanic ash, which oxygenates the beans.

A fun fact about Costa Rica coffee many people don’t know is that it is the only country in the world allowing only Arabica beans to be grown. In fact, a law was passed in 1989 officially prohibiting farmers from planting any other beans – a move intended to foster only the best and highest quality coffee beans. Incidentally, also a move that has paid off.

Indeed, despite containing less caffeine than Robusta beans, Arabica beans have a superior flavour. They also contain 60% more naturally occurring fats and almost twice as much sugar. This gives them a smoother, sweeter taste, with intoxicatingly flavourful notes of chocolate and hints of fruits or berries.

Common Costa Rican Coffee Varieties

Costa Rica produces consistently high-quality coffee – the best of which are distinguished, with bright acidity and a clean, fruity, and crisp flavour. The most common Costa Rican coffee varieties include:

  • Bourbon
  • Caturra
  • Catuai
  • Geisha
  • Mondo
  • Novo
  • Typica
  • Villalobos
  • Villa Sarchi

Costa Rica coffee is some of the most versatile java around. It can do exceptionally well as a light roast, is equally remarkable as a medium roast, and is spectacular as a dark roast. Generally speaking, a light roast will yield a clean and sweet flavour, a medium roast will produce a clean taste with mild acidity, and a dark roast will deliver a complete and robust flavour profile.

Brewing Costa Rican Coffee

Costa Ricans are very fond of their coffee. They traditionally prepare it as "café chorreado," which is made using ground Costa Rica coffee and a simple drip method often filtered through cotton. Typically, coffee is prepared first thing in the morning as part of the breakfast ritual, but it is also drunk throughout the day, at meals, and in most social gatherings.

In our neck of the woods, we can choose the method we prefer to prepare our coffee beans from Costa Rica. Whether it be cold-drip, pour-over, or AeroPress brew. Traditional coffee brewing or steeping methods such as a French press, percolator, or espresso machine are also excellent options for preparing Costa Rican coffee beans.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve never purchased Costa Rican coffee before, it’s important to warn you that it doesn’t come cheap. Indeed, Costa Rica produces some of the most expensive premium coffees in the world – a testament to the high quality of the beans and the uniquely decadent flavour profiles they offer.

Some top-of-the-line Costa Rican coffee brands to explore include Volcanica Costa Rican Peaberry, Cooper's Cask Wine Barrel-Aged, Teasia Coffee Single Origin, Cafe Britt Tarrazu Montecielo Ground Coffee, and, surprisingly, Kirkland Whole Bean Costa Rican Coffee.
