What is Fair Trade Coffee?

Coffee is the most popular beverage in the world. And our love affair with the drink has never been more intense, with an estimated two billion cups being drunk every single day. Indeed, coffee is big business and generates a global annual income of USD 200 billion, according to the latest report by the International Coffee Organization, and those who produce fair trade coffee ensure those who work in the fields get a fair wage and working conditions.

More than 70 countries produce coffee, but the majority comes from the top five producers: Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia (the birthplace of coffee), Indonesia, and Vietnam. Unfortunately, in undeveloped or developing nations, the farmers, growers, and workers often risk being exploited and not being fairly compensated for their labor—a concept known as unfair trade. Unfair trade can contribute to poverty and the oppression of the world’s most vulnerable. Some of the most significant issues associated with unfair trade include water pollution, deforestation, the use of GMOs and harmful pesticides, harsh quotas, slave labour, child labour, and others. Children and women in developing countries are often on the frontlines so fair trade coffee production is important.

Fair Trade Coffee Certification

Fortunately, the fair trade movement has grown considerably since it began its journey five decades ago. Today, you can get fair trade certified coffee (and other products) from around the world, which ensures the farmers who grow coffee receive an appropriate price and their communities and the environment are also protected. Certified fair trade coffee directly supports a better life for farming communities in the developing world, helps raise their families out of poverty, provides them with an opportunity to improve their communities' infrastructure, and protects the environment.

  • Fair trade coffee practices equal no forced or child labour.
