WHAT IS MONK FRUIT?
In Canada, chronic diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes are on the rise and account for more than $80 billion in annual health care costs. With the average Canadian consuming 57.1g of added sugars, 67.1 g of free sugars (present in honey, syrups, fruit juice, & concentrates), and 105.6 g of total sugars health care agencies have been trying to rally people towards adopting a healthier lifestyle. This is where alternative sweeteners such as monk fruit sweetener come in.
Monk Fruit Origins and Uses
Monk fruit (Momordica grosvenori), also sometimes referred to as lo han guo, is a small, green fruit and a member of the gourd family that is native to southern China and northern Thailand.
Monk fruit is said to be roughly 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar, so a small amount goes a very long way. Monk fruits high concentration of anti-diabetic properties, mogrosides (special glycosides that are not absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract) do not provide calories and carbs, and in turn, do not raise blood glucose levels. This means you can fully satisfy your sweet tooth without throwing off your glycemia or causing unwanted weight gain.
Also, contrary to other alternative sweeteners (most notably, artificial ones), which can cause side effects such as gas, bloating, and other allergic reactions, monk fruit sweetener is extremely well-tolerated and has no known side effects.

Making the Most Out Of Your Natural Sweetener
Monk fruit sweeteners come in several different forms from liquid extract to powders and granules. Monk fruit is also added to a wide range of natural foods (cookies, bars, etc.), as well as drinks and dietary supplements). You can add monk fruit to hot and cold beverages and dishes. It can be added to coffee or tea, used as a substitute for sugar in baking, sprinkled on oatmeal, or yogurt, whipped into a delicious mousse, or added to just about any dish that needs a touch of sweetness.
When selecting your monk fruit sweetener, make sure to read labels carefully as many are labeled as monk fruit, but in reality, feature a blend of monk fruit and erythritol, the latter of which is a sugar alcohol, like xylitol, sorbitol, and maltitol. There are a couple of distinctions between the two: erythritol is not 100% calorie-free like monk fruit. It contains about 6% of the calories of sugar and 70% of its sweetness. Also, erythritol, like most sugar alcohols, can cause significant digestive issues in certain individuals.
