Studies have shown that fluoride benefits teeth because it can help accelerate the remineralization of weakened tooth enamel, slow demineralization, reverse cavities in their early stage, and prevent the growth of harmful oral bacteria. However, another growing body of research suggests that the regular use of fluoride can cause long-lasting adverse health effects throughout the body. The most common issue associated with a regular high fluoride intake is "fluoridosis, " which results in white or brown speckles forming on teeth. Fluoridosis is caused by overexposure to fluoride in the early years when permanent teeth develop.
