Discover Natural Eye Drops for Enhanced Eye Health
Eye drops are designed to be applied directly to the eyes. They typically come as a liquid solution with a dropper or nozzle. They may be used to treat a wide range of conditions affecting the eyes, including dryness, redness, allergies, infections, glaucoma, and more. Natural eye drops are a great choice because unfortunately, conventionally available eye drops often contain a whole host of problematic ingredients that are unsafe when used frequently or even daily (though they are not labelled as such). Some of the most problematic ingredients include:
- Preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride (BAK) or chlorhexidine are intended to help prevent bacterial contamination in the eye drop bottle. However, certain individuals can be sensitive or allergic to these preservatives, experiencing eye irritation, redness, or an allergic reaction.
- Vasoconstrictors like naphazoline or tetrahydrozoline narrow the blood vessels in the eyes, reducing redness temporarily. However, prolonged use or excessive reliance on vasoconstrictors can lead to rebound redness and dependency, where the eyes become even redder when the effects wear off.
- Lubricant additives like polyethylene glycol (PEG) or propylene glycol can cause eye irritation and allergic reactions that can manifest as skin irritation, rash, itching, or, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
- Thickeners and stabilizers like hydroxyethylcellulose or carbomer are often included in conventional eye drops to enhance viscosity and ensure proper consistency. Some individuals may be allergic or sensitive to these substances, causing eye discomfort or irritation.
- Medications and/or active ingredients – Eye drops designed to treat specific conditions, such as glaucoma or allergies, may contain medications or active ingredients that can cause all sorts of side effects.

Essential Tips for Maintaining Optimal Eye Health
Maintaining healthy eyes is dependent on a variety of factors, including eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, getting adequate sleep, protecting your eyes from the sun with sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays whenever you are outdoors, giving your eyes a break from screens (i.e. following the 20-20-20 rule), staying hydrated, and getting regular eye exams. Maintaining eye health and vision across the lifespan also requires that chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension are well-controlled to reduce the risk of eye-related complications.
