Genesis Today Saffron

Appetite Control
Pure & Potent Saffron contains high-quality saffron extract with natural active compounds that are believed to help control appetite. It is a safe and effective option for individuals who have a difficult time controlling their appetite, which may lead to weight gain. As a natural support for appetite control that also increases satiety, it may help people feel fuller, longer.

Positive Mood
Safranal and crocin, the two main active compounds in pure saffron extract, are thought to support healthy neurotransmitter function in the brain that may support positive mood and stress resilience. Feeling "good" generally yields higher energy levels and interruptions in food cravings. When taken regularly, Pure & Potent Saffron may lessen the compulsion for emotional overeating.

Antioxidants
Saffron contains antioxidants, which support a healthy immune response and act as powerful free-radical scavengers supporting healthy inflammatory processes.

Saffron

Saffron extract comes from the stigmas (the long thin hair-like projections in the middle of the flower) of the saffron crocus plant (Crocus sativus). This extract has long been used in traditional Persian medicine for the treatment of depression. It was recently shown on Dr. Oz's self-titled show as one of the belly-fat-busting supplements. Dr. Oz stated that saffron extract can "annihilate your urge to over-eat". Reviewing the literature, saffron extract has far more potential than just that (although it does that too). It has also been found to help in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, depression and even cancer.

Weight Loss Reducing Emotional Eating
A recent study in a journal called Nutrition Research showed a significant benefit of saffron extract in promoting weight loss in slightly overweight women. It was found that this particular extract reduced snacking and enhanced satiety or the feeling of having had enough. They showed that saffron combats emotional eating. It was found to trigger the same chemical cascade in the brain that creates the feeling that you get in the short-term from eating carbohydrates. Thus, supplementing can give you the ability to say "no", even when faced with tempting foods.

Alzheimer's Disease
One study found that 30mg of saffron extract daily was equally as successful at treating mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease as donepezil, a common pharmaceutical drug used in these cases. Thus, saffron extract can help to protect mental function in those afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

Cancer Therapy
Preliminary research shows successful promotion of apoptosis ("cell-suicide") in lung and colon cancer cells. A number of studies have successfully examined saffron extract as a treatment against several cancer cell lines in test tubes. Further research is required, but saffron extract may have beneficial effects in the treatment of cancer.

Depression
A study of 40 depressed people, found that 30mg per day of saffron extract was found to be as effective as fluoxetine (Prozac) in the treatment of depression. Thus, in addition to its other benefits, saffron extract may also help to treat depression. It is likely that these effects happen through similar alterations in the brains chemical pathways that allow for reduced food cravings. These effects are not surprising since saffron has been used in traditional Persian medicine for this purpose for centuries.

How can I take saffron extract?
Saffron extract is available in capsule and liquid form from a variety of manufacturers. It has been well studied at a dose of 30mg per day, often divided into 15mg doses given twice daily. This dose has been found to be safe and without significant side effects.

Black Pepper

Black pepper is a spice commonly used throughout the world today, and can be found in shakers on most dining tables in the industrialized world. The black pepper vine (Piper nigrum) produces small fruit that are commonly called peppercorns when they are dried. The main active constituent of black pepper is piperine, which when refined for supplemental use, is called bioperine.

Spice
Pepper has been used for centuries as a culinary spice around the world and was commonly traded for this purpose. It adds a slight spicy heat to dishes as well as its own characteristic pepper flavour. Because of this, those with stomach and intestinal ulcers, and others avoiding gut irritation should not use black pepper in their food, nor should they supplement with it.

Traditional Medicine Use
Black pepper has been used for centuries in Eastern medicine to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as: diarrhea, constipation, and indigestion. Recent research in mice has supported its use in these conditions. It was also used to benefit pain and inflammation when applied directly to the skin. This is also supported by research in animal models for arthritis, where piperine was found to have anti-inflammatory, and anti-arthritic effects as well. In Ayurvedic medicine, black pepper is used as a home remedy for sore throat, congestion and cough, as well as other lung conditions.

Weight Loss
Black pepper extract has been shown to reduce circulating fat levels in the bloodstream. This can be particularly beneficial to those with dyslipidemia and other risks for Arteriosclerosis. Piperine has also been shown to prevent the formation of new fat cells in mice. In humans, there is some controversy as to whether it acts as a thermogenic compound, which means that it may or may not accelerates energy metabolism in the body. Interestingly, it has been found that piperine can promote the production of serotonin and endorphins in the brain, which are responsible for feelings of happiness and satiety. Thus, it may also help to reduce food cravings and hunger.

How can I take black pepper?
Using black pepper in your food is an excellent way to gradually introduce it into your diet. Research on human supplementation of black pepper extract and piperidine is still in its infancy, and recommended dosages have not yet been established. Ask your healthcare provider for recommendations particular to your specific case, or follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage listed on the label. Be sure to avoid supplementation if you are on any medications as piperine can alter their absorption, or if you have any gastrointestinal irritation, including ulcers.
