LIGHT ROAST COFFEE: A SYMPHONY OF FLAVOUR & AROMA

People often drink coffee for the caffeine it provides and the resulting mental and physical energy boost. Of course, many more people drink coffee for the sheer pleasure of it. Indeed, drinking coffee is a sensory experience, with its distinct aromas, tastes, and flavours. But which roast is right for you? Let's take a further look into the world of light roast coffee.

Various factors influence a coffee's end taste and flavour notes. These include soil and terroir, or growing conditions, including soil type, climate, elevation, and surrounding plants; the kind of coffee plant; the farming practices; the picking method; processing; and roasting. Roasting has the most impact on a coffee's final flavour and complexity, as well as whether or not its full potential has been realized.

Coffee roasts are classified as light, medium, or dark, and each has its unique characteristics and taste. In turn, a coffee’s taste is a function of five things: acidity, aroma, bitterness, body, and aftertaste, all of which are affected by roasting.

What Is Light Roast Coffee?

The type of roast a bean receives will highly influence the taste of the coffee once it is brewed. The lighter a bean, the less long it has been roasted, so it generally retains much of its natural flavour. Lightly roasted coffee beans have also not been heated to the same temperature range as dark—typically only until they reach 350°–400°F, or the first 'crack.'

Because of this, light roast coffee beans retain much of their natural acids and oils. This is why they tend to have much more acidity than darker roasts. Another advantage of lighter roasts is that they are generally much less bitter than darker ones. Acidity aside, lighter roasts offer an exceptionally complex flavour profile, revealing traces of sweetness, tanginess, and subtle fruity and floral notes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Light Roast Coffee

Do light roast coffees have less caffeine?
Most people assume that the darker the roast, the more caffeine there is; however, that could not be further from the truth. On the contrary, the more coffee is roasted (the darker it is), the less caffeine it contains. So, because lightly roasted beans cook for a shorter time and at a lower temperature, they retain more caffeine.

Does lightly- roasted coffee have more antioxidants?
While light roast coffee retains more polyphenol antioxidants after roasting, studies suggest darker roasts have more profound antioxidant activity.

Is light roast coffee weaker?
Light-roasted coffee contains a bit more caffeine than dark-roasted coffee, so in that sense, it is not weaker but somewhat stronger. Darker roasted coffee has a much richer, bolder (some might say stronger) flavour than light.
