Wild Yam As An Herbal Supplement

The Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa) is an unassuming tuberous root native to North America and Asia and has been prized for centuries for its many varied therapeutic abilities. A member of the Dioscoreaceae family, Wild Yam boasts a rich history that dates back to Native American and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

It is primarily found in North America's eastern and central regions, thriving in woodlands, meadows, and along riverbanks. The Wild Yam’s plant's heart-shaped leaves and coiling vines make it easily identifiable. Despite its name, it is not a true yam (genus Dioscorea), a distinct species primarily grown in tropical regions. The confusion arose due to the tuber's appearance, which closely resembles true yams.

The underground tubers of Wild Yam are rich in diosgenin, a steroidal saponin that serves as a precursor for the synthesis of progesterone and other hormones. This unique composition is key to the Wild Yam’s considerable medicinal prowess.

Historical writings tell us that in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Wild Yam was used extensively to tone the spleen and stomach and promote overall health and well-being. Native American tribes, including the Cherokee and Iroquois, on the other hand, are said to have employed Wild Yam to alleviate digestive issues, soothe coughs, and address menstrual discomfort. In the 18th and 19th centuries, tubers were used to treat menstrual cramps and problems related to childbirth. Today, it is principally reserved for menstrual and menopausal complaints (though it does have quite a few other applications).

Health Benefits of Wild Yams

Who Would Benefit From Wild Yam Supplements?

As you can see from the numerous benefits listed above, Wild Yam may be helpful for a wide range of individuals. First and foremost, it is recommended to balance hormones, as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy, as well as to alleviate menopausal symptoms. It may also be suggested to promote reproductive health in women, as well as to help regulate blood sugar in those with diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance, and other conditions related to poor glycemic balance. Anyone dealing with chronic digestive issues and/or poorly regulated cholesterol may also find this supplement quite beneficial.

Wild Yam Supplement Varieties

Wild yam is available in several different forms, including:

Fresh Root – In its natural state, the fresh root can be used for various culinary and medicinal purposes, although it's not as commonly consumed this way.

Dried Root – Drying the root preserves it for extended periods and can be used in teas, DIY tinctures, or other preparations.

Capsules and Tablets – Supplements are often available in capsule or tablet form, providing a convenient and measured dosage.

Liquid Extracts and Tinctures – These are concentrated supplement varieties and made by extracting the active compounds from the root using alcohol or another solvent. They offer rapid absorption.

Powder - The root is sometimes ground into a powder form, which can be used in various ways, such as adding it to smoothies or incorporating it into recipes.

Creams and Topical Products - Wild Yam is widely available for topical use in creams or gels for transdermal absorption.

There is no established standard dosage for these supplements. Recommended dosages may range from 200 to 1,000 mg or more, depending on the product and its concentration.

Cautions & Considerations

Those using Wild Yam should be aware that they may experience side effects, including gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea and diarrhea, allergic reactions, and changes in blood pressure. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should exercise caution, as Wild Yam may have estrogen-like effects that could impact hormone levels. Individuals with hormone-sensitive cancers or blood clotting disorders should also avoid Wild Yam because of its hormonal properties.
