GUGGUL EXTRACT
Guggul or Guggulsterone is a gum-resin and plant-derived steroid extracted from the guggul plant, Commiphora mukul, native to India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The Commiphora mukul plant belongs to the Burseraceae family, also known as the "incense family," which also includes Commiphora wightii, Commiphora gileadensis, Boswellia serrata, and Boswellia sacra.
Guggul has long been a staple of Ayurvedic medicine. It contains a unique blend of plant compounds, including steroids, essential oils, lignans, flavonoids, carbohydrates, and amino acids, that impart potent therapeutic activity.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, guggul extract aims to balance all three doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha, though it is best at alleviating vata-associated conditions such as fear, feelings of anxiety, dry skin, cracking joints, difficulty sleeping, and inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
Benefits Of Guggul
- Aids Diabetes Management
- Boosts Digestive Health
- Helps Decrease Cholesterol Synthesis In The Liver

Who Needs Guggul Extract?
Guggul is both an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory and may be recommended in a variety of applications, including to promote weight loss, treat hypothyroidism by increasing iodine uptake and improving the activity of enzymes produced by the thyroid gland, lower cholesterol, balance glycemia, and facilitate the management of diabetes. Guggul is also highly effective for aiding weight loss and weight management, alleviating symptoms of joint disorders such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, and joint injuries, and soothing inflammatory skin conditions.
Final Thoughts On Guggul Extract
Guggul extract can be purchased in health food stores and online through your favourite supplement retailer. It is available in capsules, liquid tinctures, powders, and lotions. Guggul extract is considered safe when taken at the recommended dose. While not common, certain side effects are possible, including skin rash, constipation, diarrhea, light nausea, hiccups, and irregular menstrual cycles. Higher doses of guggul are not appropriate and have been linked to possible liver damage. If you aren't sure how to use guggul, speak to the knowledgeable staff in-store or online for guidance.
