Kyolic: A Long & Unique History
While you may be familiar with the Kyolic brand, it is actually owned and operated by Wakunaga of America, Co. Ltd. A natural health brand that owns a few high-quality natural health brands and originated in Japan post World War 2.
It was founded by Mr. Wakunaga, who had a strong desire to improve the well-being of his community through natural health supplements. His approach was rooted in his belief that pharmaceutical companies should be devoted to research and development, and he wasn’t the only one who agreed.
In 1954 Mr. Wakunaga met Dr. Eugene Schnell, a German physician who had the same beliefs about the health industry. Dr Schnell immigrated to Japan in the 1930s after being recruited by the American military to head the Drug Administration of Japan to rebuild their pharmaceutical industry post-war.
Having grown up in Germany, a country where natural remedies were well established, Dr. Schnell knew garlic could help ward off infection and support the health of the Japanese population. This is how he joined forces with Mr. Wakunaga, and together, they developed natural garlic-based products.
In 1955 Mr. Wakunaga founded the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Company in Osaka, Japan and soon after their Aged Garlic Extract was formulated. Fast forward to 1972, Mr. Wakunaga, along with his son, started Wakunaga of America and brought the healing powers of garlic to the Western world, better known as Kyolic.
Today, the third generation of the Wakunaga family is still heavily involved in daily business operations.
Sustainability Measures & Practices
Beyond making exceptional supplements, Kyolic believes in protecting the environment. They follow sustainable practices by growing their garlic organically using sustainable farming practices like crop rotation to lessen soil degradation. Their product packaging is also made from recyclable plastic or glass bottles and the labels and boxes are printed with soy-based inks.
Quality Control & Research-Backed Formulas
From farm to finished product, Kyolic supplements undergo rigorous quality control measures and many third-party tests.
Throughout the aging and manufacturing process of Kyolic’s organic garlic, it undergoes over 250 quality checks for purity and potency. After being aged for up to 20 months, it is ready to be used in more than 25 formulas.
All of their formulas are manufactured in their state-of-the-art, pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing facility in Southern California. This facility operates in adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Aside from these local certifications, their facility is also recognized internationally for its quality standards and has obtained quality certifications from Europe, Australia and beyond.
