L-Carnitine is an amino acid that assists the body in converting body fat into energy and endurance. The body use L-Carnitine to metabolize sugars, starches, and other carbohydrates. It may therefore be effective in promoting weight loss. L-Carnitine may also be effective in reducing the symptoms associated with angina, it may have a positive effect for cognitive function.
Carnitine
Carnitine has a similar structure to the other amino acids but differs in its functioning. It is not used for protein metabolism or building neurotransmitters. Carnitine is a fat shuttle that moves long chain fatty acids into the "furnace" of the cell, the mitochondrion. Fat provides a valuable source of energy for muscles, including the hardest working muscle in the body, the heart.
Carnitine prevents fatty build up in the vessels, liver and muscles. It decreases cholesterol levels, supports weight loss, increases sperm motility and improves muscle strength. It is an anti-aging nutrient because it makes the antioxidants vitamins C and E work more effectively. L-carnitine is sometimes added to infant formulas to enhance energy production and stimulate growth. L-carnitine is recommended by natural health practitioners for heart disease, heart failure, high cholesterol, improved athletic performance, weight loss and male infertility.
Acetyl-L-carnitine is a derivative of carnitine that is produced by the body. It is used for protein and carbohydrate metabolism, in addition to its role in fat transportation. Acetyl-L-carnitine is well studied for its anti-aging effects. Daily supplementation slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease by improving memory, attention, language and spatial abilities. Other health benefits of acetyl-L-carnitine are improved immune functioning, protection of the nerves and improved circulation.
The biologically active form of carnitine is L-carnitine or acetyl-L-carnitine. It is commonly found as a powder or in capsules. It may be found in formulas for heart health. It is used with coenzyme Q10 for supporting the heart. Because of their greater muscle mass, men require more carnitine than women. Vegetarians also tend to lack carnitine because food sources are animal based. Take amino acid supplements at least 1/2 hour before or after a meal to maximize their absorption. If you take an individual amino acid supplement for longer than one month, take it with an amino acid complex to prevent the deficiency of other amino acids.
Do not use supplements of D-carnitine or DL-carnitine. Do not use carnitine if you have decreased liver functioning. Carnitine can be depleted by medications like valproic acid and anti-virals.
Vitamin B-5
Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin, also known as pantothenate, or vitamin B5. The form D-panthothenic acid is required by the body as an essential nutrient, meaning that we cannot synthesize it from other substances. Interestingly, the friendly bacteria (see probiotics for more information) located in the intestines can produce vitamin B5 that we can then absorb, or we can absorb it directly from our food. B5 is commonly known as the "anti-stress" vitamin and most people in today's fast-paced society can benefit from its supplementation. Pantothenic acid can be used to treat anemia, depression, anxiety and fatigue.
Energy and Stress Adaptation
Because vitamin B5 aids in the processing of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and other vitamins during digestion, it can directly increase the body's energy utilization. In addition to this, its ability to regulate proper nerve cell signalling and stress response help to improve feelings of wellbeing and stress-adaptation. B5 is sometimes called the "anti-stress" vitamin.
Arthritis
There was some promising research performed in the 1980's on the improvement of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using vitamin B5. This examination was performed because low serum vitamin B5 levels are associated with a higher risk of developing RA. Supplementation of calcium pantothenate (a B5 derivative), improves the symptoms of RA, particularly morning pain and stiffness.
