Coral Calcium
What Is Coral Calcium?
Did you know that Coral Calcium is a naturally occurring mineral from fossilized above-sea coral beds? Indeed, coral Calcium is a salt of calcium derived from fossilized coral reefs (primarily limestone and coastal deposits) and is very similar in structure to calcium carbonate. However, coral calcium is not only an excellent source of calcium but is also rich in naturally-occurring trace minerals, including bone-building magnesium, that is essential to optimal skeletal health, as well as for proper enzymatic activity and stability. Coral Calcium Supplements
Did you know that coral calcium is a naturally occurring mineral from fossilized above-sea coral beds? Indeed, coral calcium is a salt of calcium derived from fossilized coral reefs (primarily limestone and coastal deposits) and is very similar in structure to calcium carbonate. However, the coral form is not only an excellent source of calcium but is also rich in naturally-occurring trace minerals, including bone-building magnesium, that is essential to optimal skeletal health, as well as for proper enzymatic activity and stability. Coral calcium is also available in supplements for convenient use.
Coral minerals are incredibly different from other minerals since they are ionized. I.e., they are "predigested" by coral polyp: tiny, soft-bodied organisms related to sea anemones and jellyfish that make up living coral reefs. Research tells us that up to 90% of the calcium and trace minerals in sea coral are ionized, which means they are highly bioavailable and absorbable. The body can thus readily absorb the minerals and trace minerals in coral calcium without having to break them down and ionize them. In stark contrast, most other calcium supplements (made from crushed rocks or seashells) are notoriously poorly ionized – typically, only 5 to 15% are ionized. The result, of course, is calcium supplements that offer poor absorption. This is why coral calcium supplements are of distinct advantage to anyone looking for a highly bioavailable and absorbable form of calcium that naturally comes with all of its essential co-factors (critical trace minerals) for strong, healthy bones and teeth.
Benefits of Coral Calcium
- Alkalinizes the Body
- Helps Prevent or Treat Low Calcium
- May Help Remineralize Tooth Enamel
- Optimizes Bone Mineral Density
- Promotes Healthy Muscle Contraction
Who Needs Coral Calcium Supplements?
Since it is ionized, it doesn’t need to be converted for absorption. This makes it ideal for those with poor digestion, especially the elderly, and anyone with chronic bowel conditions that may compromise their ability to absorb nutrients from the foods and supplements they consume. Coral calcium’s composition (including the various essential trace minerals that are naturally present) is very similar to human bone. This is why this form has been used by orthopaedic and osteopathic surgeons as bone graft material for over well over 30 years.
Coral Calcium Supplements
These supplements are available in a wide range of potencies from 250 mg up to 1000 mg, primarily in pill form – either tablets or capsules.
Final Thoughts
While this form offers exceptional absorbability, it's important to note that the calcium itself is present in carbonate form, which can cause gastrointestinal disturbances such as gas, bloating, constipation, and burping in certain individuals.
Medications such as those for the thyroid, antacids, and antibiotics should be taken at least 3 hours before or after taking this supplement.
