Glutamine
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body. It is called non-essential amino acid, because it is a component of protein that can be manufactured by the body from other amino acids. Just because it is non-essential does not mean that the body cannot benefit from its supplementation. Glutamine is depleted by stress, physical injuries and inflammation, in areas like the intestine. It promotes muscle growth, stops muscle depletion caused by the stress hormone cortisol and it is an alternative fuel source for the brain when glucose is not readily available.
The promotion of lean muscle mass by glutamine is its most well known quality. Athletes have been using glutamine as a performance-enhancing supplement for many years. Medically, glutamine can rebuild lean tissue after periods of convalescence, surgery or muscle wasting illnesses.
Glutamine is the primary fuel source for cells that line the digestive tract. These fragile cells can be rebuilt with L-glutamine after damage from intestinal inflammation like ulcerative colitis, stomach ulcers or radiation from cell therapy. In the liver glutamine enhances the activity of glutathione, an antioxidant responsible for detoxifying drugs and alcohol. In the brain glutamine provides energy to brain cells and is helpful in cases of depression, senility and developmental disorders. Glutamine can reduce cravings for sugar and alcohol.
What are amino acids?
As the building blocks of protein, amino acids are vital to health. Next to water, amino acids in the form of proteins make up the greatest portion of our body weight. They comprise tendons, muscles and ligaments; organs and glands; hair and nails; important bodily fluids, and are a necessary part of every cell in the body.
There are over 20 amino acids, separated into two categories essential and non-essential. Essential amino acids are those that cannot be manufactured by your body, hence, it is essential that you obtain them from your diet. Non-essential amino acids can be manufactured by your body, however, your body must have the right combination of essential amino acids and supporting nutrients to optimize healthy protein maintenance, so supplementation may be desirable.
What isa free-formAmino Acid?
Free-frommeans the amino acid is in its purest form. Free-form amino acids require no digestion and are absorbed directly into the blood stream.
