A primary function of the liver (more than 500 functions of the liver have been identified) is detoxification. The liver neutralizes harmful poisons into harmless substances. As our prime defense against toxins, a fully-functioning liver is essential.
milk thistle Extract: counteracts the effects of pollutants and has liver-protective effects. Silymarin, the active substance in milk thistle, is a powerful antioxidant, protecting the liver from damage due to toxins and can support liver tissue regeneration.
Milk thistle was used historically as a digestive aid, to promote the flow of digestive juices, and as a tonic for nursing mothers, to increase milk supply. Nowadays it's popularity stems from its ability to detoxify and protect a very important organ, the liver. Our liver is responsible for filtering out most everything that should not be in our body and processing it so that it doesn't cause damage to other cells.
It also metabolizes hormones and fats, and makes sure that the transportation system for fats (cholesterol) is working properly. The livers secretions, called bile, carry metabolized waste products out into the intestine where they can be excreted. The medicinal activity of milk thistle is in a molecule called silymarin. It causes liver cells, hepatocytes, to resist toxic compounds and regenerate themselves. It also increases glutathione in the liver.
Turmeric Extract: prevents liver damage and has been used for many centuries to treat and support the liver. Turmeric is especially helpful for people who drink alcohol regularly or frequently use common painkillers both of which damage the liver with long-term use.
Turmeric contains antioxidant chemicals, called curcuminoids, for neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause damage to the body's tissues when they bump into healthy cells.
Thus turmeric can be used to stop infections, protect the liver from toxins and may be useful for maintaining healthy immune functions. The same molecules inhibit inflammation, thus acting as pain relieving agents. Turmeric has been shown to improve joint mobility and reduce the pain and swelling associated with all forms of arthritis. This activity is equivalent to the effect of some NSAID drugs. Turmeric lowers the level of harmful, or LDL, cholesterol and increases the level of helpful, or HDL, cholesterol. It also increases circulation and blood flow. All of these properties make turmeric a good choice for individuals with compromised circulation, heart disease and high cholesterol.
dandelion: contains enzyme-like substances that stimulate the function of larger organs, such as the liver and kidneys. "Studies have shown that dandelion enhances the flow of bile, improving such conditions as liver congestion, bile duct inflammation, hepatitis, gallstones, and jaundice."
Dandelion roots are used for digestive disorders because it stimulates the release of bile, which helps the body to digest fats.
It may also help to regulate cholesterol levels. The release of bile also flushes the gallbladder and liver of processed toxins, making dandelion an excellent liver cleanser.
artichoke Powder: Artichoke protects the liver from poisonous effects of toxins in a manner similar to silymarin from milk thistle. It is able to prevent liver damage from the same wide range of poisons as milk thistle.
