Neem’s History & Uses
Neem has a very wide range of uses, from toothaches to skin support...
Neem is an evergreen that grows in the tropics and sub-tropics. It has been used widely in Traditional Indian medicine for various therapeutic purposes. Scientific investigations carried out during the last two decades have reported anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties of Neem.
The medicinal uses are attributed to several compounds including azadirachtin and meliantriol. Neem products have been used topically for skin concerns such as, against heat rash, boils, wounds, chicken pox, topical fungal issues, dental bacteria and respiratory ailments. It is advisable to speak to your healthcare practitioner before applying Neem to your concern to make sure there aren't any side effects or allergic potential.
It is also found in a variety of personal hygiene products, due to the fact they are natural, safe, and biodegradable, keeping the environment clean.
Neem can be purchased as an essential oil, cream, salve or ointment. It is usually used on the skin, as a mouthwash, or as an inhalation. In North America it is rarely used internally but it is used in India for internal conditions. It can also be found in hygiene products and natural pesticides. Essential oils are concentrated substances and should only be used topically when properly diluted and are not be used internally.
There has never been a report of the topical or dental application of neem causing an adverse side effect. It is always recommended that personal reaction and tolerance to herbal products be tested at the onset of use for any new supplement. The safety of neem in children, pregnant women and nursing mothers has not been determined. It is advisable to speak to your healthcare provider or naturopath before taking new herbal supplements.
