Homocysteine, a byproduct of different natural functions in your body is thought to be an even bigger risk factor for heart attacks than cholesterol. High Homocysteine levels have been linked to an increased risk of premature heart disease and stroke. Homocysteine is amino acid, mainly produced form eating animal products. Ideally this substance is converted into other non-threatening amino acids by the body. However, with age; poor diet; smoking and other lifestyle factors, this conversion can become impeded and eventually lead to a dangerously high accumulation of Homocysteine in the blood.
Studies indicate that the problem of high Homocysteine levels is strongly influenced by diet-- specifically, low blood levels of vitamins B-6, B-12, and folic acid. These vitamins convert Homocysteine into other harmless amino acids. Supplementing with these vitamins has shown a decrease in Homocysteine concentrations and cardiovascular disease risk.
Heart Health
The cardiovascular system consists of the heart and approximately 60 thousand miles of blood vessels, called arteries and veins. The heart pumps blood around the body. The vessels nourish cells by transporting nutrients and waste products, through the blood, around the body.
Any interruption in blood supply, for example a heart attack or stroke, causes tissue death so the maintenance of a healthy cardiovascular system is essential.
Most cardiovascular disease occurs due to lifestyle factors such as:
1. Obesity, poor nutrition, and medication usage.
2. Free radical damage due to environmental toxins or smoking.
3. Stress or poor emotional health.
4. Lack of exercise.
