The Benefits of Garlic

Garlic has been used for its medicinal properties since the days of the pharaohs. The Chinese have used garlic to heal for over 3,000 years and Sanskrit records document its use as far back as 5,000 years ago.

Today, Garlic is a popular herb in the kitchen as well as the medicine cabinet. Their sulphur compounds, alliin and allicin, have been well studied for their pharmacological activity. Scientists have confirmed garlic's remarkable power to treat various diseases and ailments, and to enhance longevity.

Garlic contains a unique combination of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, sulfur compounds and amino acids, and is particularly rich in the antioxidant mineral, selenium.

Garlic & Heart Health

Garlic provides protection against heart disease and strokes by intervening in the process of atherosclerosis at many stages of its development. Numerous double-blind placebo-controlled studies in people with cholesterol levels higher than 200 mg/dl show that garlic supplements standardized for alliin content can lower total serum cholesterol levels by about 10 to 12%. LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels drop an average 15%, HDL ("good") cholesterol levels rise about 10%, and triglyceride levels typically drop by 15%. (While a drop of 15 percent may not seem very high, the key factor here is that the joint action of lowering LDL and raising HDL levels significantly reduces the risk of heart disease.)

What are Alliin and Allicin?

Garlic contains a number of beneficial compounds that contribute to its potent healing abilities. The most significant of these is alicin. Allicin is the substance in garlic that produces the pungent garlic odour. It is derived from a sulfur compound known as alliin, which itself has no healing properties. Alliin is transformed into allicin by the enzyme allinase when garlic is cut, chewed, or mixed with water, (as in the process of digestion). Once allicin has formed, it is highly unstable, breaking down in a few days. It is essential therefore, that strict precautions be taken during the manufacturing process to ensure alliin is not converted to allicin. Since it is a highly stable compound, the presence of alliin in a garlic formula is an excellent marker for measuring product quality.

Why SISU Garlic Extract?

Sisu's Garlic Extract is standardized to contain a high allicin potential, PLUS, each caplet is enteric coated which serves a number of important functions, including:

  • the full allicin potential is released in the alkaline environment of the small intestine, rather than the more acidic environment of the stomach.

  • the stomach is protected against any potentially irritating effects that might arise from a high potency garlic supplement.

  • prevents unpleasant after-taste caused by reflux reactions.
