Echinacea Tea for Winter
Lemon Echinacea Throat Coat tea is my favourite herbal tea. I don't drink regular tea or coffee. It's delicious and my go-to especially when I feel a cold or virus coming on. If I am already sick this is the only thing that stops my cough. I add juice from half a lemon and 2 tablespoons of liquid honey. It stops the cough long enough for me to get back to sleep. I highly recommend it to build the immune system. I can't take echinacea in other forms as they make me dizzy. Try it and see if you like it as well! I have bought it in health stores and grocery stores, but National Nutrition's price is the best and their door-to-door service is quick, effective and accurate. This is the only place I buy health products (vitamins etc) now.

Best Tea for the Cold Season
I love Traditional Medicinal Throat Coat tea for the wintertime. They taste good (lemon flavour) and are very soothing (from the echinacea) during cold weather.

So good
This tea is excellent for soothing a sore throat from a cold or flu or from smoking - I smoke cigars which can dry out my throat quite badly but this tea fixes it right up and it tastes amazing!

Licorice
Natural licorice can help you deal with stress, stomach ulcers, cold and coughs...

Licorice is well known as a flavouring agent and you may not know that it has a rich history of medicinal use. Licorice is an adaptogenic herb, meaning that it helps people during stressful times and recovery from illness and fatigue.

Studies show that licorice contains chemicals that have a structure that is similar to the steroid hormones. The end result is stimulation of the adrenal gland and activation of the body's energy reserves. This response keeps us safe, allowing us to fight for survival, or to flee from dangerous situations. It also increases heart rate; blood pressure and blood flow to the brain, muscles, lungs and heart.

Thus licorice leads to increased energy, mental performance and performance in physical tasks. This response can deplete the body after a while so licorice must be used in moderation. Licorice also contains substances that regulate blood sugar, which also helps its energy enhancing properties. Licorice is a demulcent, an agent that coats and protects mucosal surfaces. In the respiratory tract licorice decreases cough, speeds removal of mucus and helps to heal the tract. In the stomach and intestines DGL licorice protects the lining from ulceration. Licorice also has anti-inflammatory properties and weak estrogen hormonal balancing activity. Natural health practitioners recommend licorice for a variety of needs including increased energy, stress, colds and coughs. DGL licorice is recommended for stomach and intestinal ulcers.

Licorice can be found in a variety of different forms. Dried root, powdered root, encapsulated root, liquid extract and tincture are available. Standardized products give the consumer assurance that some active compounds are present in the formulation. Licorice is found in formulas for energy, stress reduction and cold or cough relief. Licorice candy is usually made with anise, not licorice, and does not have medicinal value. Licorice is found in many traditional Chinese formulas. Use caution when purchasing these formulas because their quality varies widely, toxic contaminants may be present and manufacturing practices in China are not well regulated. DGL licorice is found as chewable tablets or solid extract.

Licorice contains components that have blood thinning, blood pressure altering and blood sugar altering properties. Licorice supplements should be used with caution by individuals with active bleeding, blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, individuals with liver or kidney disease, hypertension, heartbeat irregularities, heart failure, edema, or estrogen sensitive tumours. Pregnant women or nursing mothers should not use it. Licorice can alter the effects of anti-hypertensives, laxatives, corticosteroids, blood thinners, NSAIDs, diuretics, digoxin, potassium, hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives or hypoglycemic agents. DGL licorice is deglycyrrhizinated and therefore does not alter blood pressure, kidney function or hormone levels. It must not be taken with nitrofurantoin. Some practitioners recommend supplementation with potassium while using licorice because licorice's diuretic properties deplete potassium.
