WHAT IS VITAMIN B17?
You would be forgiven for doing a double-take upon seeing the term “Vitamin B-17”, especially when you consider that it’s generally accepted that there are eight B vitamins, collectively called B complex vitamins. These are thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), and cobalamin (B12).
Vitamin B17 is, in fact, a name given to amygdalin, a toxic chemical compound found in apricot seeds that produces cyanide as a metabolic by-product, which can reportedly support healthy cell growth inside the body. Experts believe that the name B17 was given to amygdalin to suggest this compound was, in fact, essential to health. A purified form of amygdalin has long been marketed under the patented brand name “Laetrile” to support proper cell growth and is sold by recommendation only in select countries, despite little evidence of its safety or efficacy.
Amygdalin, while primarily sourced from apricot pits, is also found in raw nuts, and plants, such as lima beans, and clover. Though there are a lot of converging opinions on vitamin B17, an extensive systematic review of the medical literature recently concluded that because the cyanide in apricot kernels is bound and not able to circulate inside the body, there is no basis for its use in cellular treatment. Currently, Health Canada does not recognize the use of amygdalin/Laetrile/vitamin B17 for the treatment of proper cell maintenance.

Natural Sources of Vitamin B17
Apricot kernel seeds, or apricot kernel seed powder, as well as apricot kernel seed oil for topical use can be purchased online and in-store for those interested in a natural source of amygdalin. However, it’s important to note that it's next to impossible to determine how much or how little amygdalin you'll be getting in a given product. While sweet apricots are typically sold as snacks or for baking, this form is reputed to contain precious little amygdalin. Bitter apricot seeds, on the other hand, have been shown to contain significant amounts of amygdalin, so may raise cyanide levels in the body to potentially harmful levels.
When used topically, apricot kernel seed oil, which is rich in vitamin A, nourishes the skin, as well as helps reduce the appearance of blemishes, fine lines, and wrinkles. It also makes for a luxurious moisturizing oil, that is readily absorbed into the skin without leaving a sticky or oily residue.
