Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

WHAT IS RIBOFLAVIN? Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, was the second vitamin to be isolated and the first to be extracted from the B complex of vitamins. It is a water-soluble vitamin and is intimately involved in metabolism and cellular respiration inside the body. Like other B vitamins, riboflavin helps transform the foods we eat such as fats, carbohydrates, and proteins into usable energy for our cells.

Riboflavin is essential for healthy growth and development and, in tandem with B1, is responsible for normal red blood cell formation. Riboflavin also plays an essential role in the body’s immune response and participates in the production of antibodies.

Riboflavin is also critically important to tryptophan metabolism, a key neurotransmitter that the body uses to make melatonin and serotonin, which support better sleep quality, mood balance, as well as increases emotional well-being and pain tolerance (think chronic pain conditions). Riboflavin also supports healthy methylation inside the body, so helps repair DNA, regulates hormones, supports detoxification, maintains immune function, and supports healthy nerve function.

Riboflavin deficiency typically occurs along with a deficiency in the other B vitamins and may be the result of chronic diarrhea, malabsorption syndromes, liver disease, kidney disease, and hemodialysis, as well as chronic alcoholism. Deficiency has been associated with preeclampsia in pregnant women and can affect multiple pathways in the metabolism of vitamin B6, folate, niacin, and iron. Studies show that riboflavin supplementation helps protect and preserve heart health, prevents, and relieves migraine headaches, and helps maintain cellular integrity.

BENEFITS of RIBOFLAVIN

  • Helps Maintain Healthy Energy Production
  • Safeguards Mucous Membranes & Digestive Health
  • Supports Optimal Growth & Development

WHO NEEDS RIBOFLAVIN?

Naturopaths may recommend a riboflavin supplement as a prophylactic treatment to help reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines. Riboflavin is also frequently recommended to help relieve eye fatigue, prevent cataracts, address chronic pain conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia, as well as to help relieve leg cramps. A high-quality, high-dose B-complex vitamin is also extremely important for anyone struggling with alcohol addiction, and anorexia.

RIBOFLAVIN POTENCY, FORMS & FORMATS

Riboflavin Potency

Riboflavin supplements are commonly offered in either isolated form, or more often than not, in B complexes. The potency is usually in the 50 to 400 mg dose range. A lower daily dose is recommended for those wanting to prevent or treat deficiency, while higher doses may be required according to the condition, or symptoms you are trying to address.

Riboflavin Forms

Riboflavin supplements are available either as the more common free-form Riboflavin, or the preferred Riboflavin R5'-Phosphate, which is considered the bioactive form of vitamin B2.

Riboflavin Formats

Riboflavin as a standalone supplement can be purchased as a tablet, capsule (gelatin or veggie), as well as powder. Riboflavin is also widely available as part of B complexes in tablets, capsules, chewables, gummies, as well as sprays, liquids, and powders.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR RIBOFLAVIN SUPPLEMENT

Alcohol use disorder (AUD), lack of proper nutrition, oral contraceptives, and diseases such as HIV, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, and chronic heart disease, can all put you at risk of riboflavin deficiency due to either decreased intake, decreased absorption, or difficulties with riboflavin use in the body. Inadequate riboflavin intake and metabolism are also frequently seen in the elderly. Because riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin, it cannot be stored in the body’s tissues, so it’s best to select a formula with a lower potency that can be taken in divided doses throughout the day.
