Vitamin E and Selenium

Research has shown that consuming antioxidant-rich foods and supplements improves both longevity and overall health as well as helps slow the signs of aging. Antioxidants promote a longer life span, and protect against the body from disease and supports healthy cell formation as well as reduces the risk of vision loss associated with cataracts and macular degeneration. Let's explore the powerful antioxidant, vitamin e and how it pairs with selenium.

There are many antioxidant supplements available on the market; so much so in fact, that it can be hard to choose. Of these, one of the most effective formulas you can find is the combination of vitamin e and selenium. What’s particularly advantageous about this blend is that while both are potent Antioxidants in their own right, that protect the body’s cells from free radical damage, they do so in very different ways.

Selenium is an essential trace element, that’s low status has been linked to a variety of diseases associated with oxidation. Selenium is also an essential component of many antioxidant enzymes (or peroxidase enzymes) and plays a central role in protecting cells and tissues from oxidative stress, as well as regulates the redox status of cells and tissues; therefore, is critical to the prevention of DNA damage.

Vitamin E is a molecule that acts as a powerful antioxidant, that prevents cell damage by inhibiting lipid (fat) oxidation and the production of free radicals. As such, vitamin e can prevent, and treat, many conditions associated with aging and everyday, cumulative exposure to free radicals in the environment. Vitamin E also protects other fat-soluble vitamins from being destroyed by oxygen.

In addition, it’s interesting to note that selenium and vitamin E seem to work as a tag-team. Selenium has a sparing effect on vitamin E, and delays the onset of deficiency, while Vitamin E, in turn, helps protect against or delay selenium deficiency. This is why the combination of selenium and vitamin E provides powerful, synergistic, and lasting antioxidant protection.

Selenium & Vitamin E Potency, Forms & Formats

Potency

There are many different dual dose formulas on the market; each supplying a different dose. The most common potency being 200 mcg of Selenium to 200 - 400 IU of Vitamin E.

Forms

The form of selenium used in these antioxidant blends is primarily selenomethionine, or selenium chelate, as well as, on occasion, methylselenocysteine.

Vitamin E is either present in natural form as d-alpha-tocopherol, which is by far the more desirable form, or as dl-alpha-tocopherol, which is much less well absorbed by the body. Dry forms of vitamin E are also used in some blends and may be more suitable for those than have difficulty digesting fats and oil.

Formats

Selenium and Vitamin E antioxidant formulas are offered primarily in capsule or soft gel form, as well as occasionally in tablets.

Getting The Most Out of Your Supplement

Selenium also works well with other antioxidants such as vitamin C, glutathione, and vitamin B3 (niacin) to prevent oxygen molecules from becoming too reactive, which is why there are a variety of antioxidant formulas available that combine many different antioxidants. One of the most popular is Selenium with Vitamin E and C.
