WHAT IS CELLULITE?

Cellulite affects up to 98% of women, though many men are also affected. But what exactly is cellulite? In a nutshell, cellulite is a cosmetic condition that is caused by persistent subcutaneous fat accumulation under the skin that pushes up against the connective tissue making the skin appear lumpy, bumpy, and dimpled, sometimes called “cottage cheese skin” or “orange peel skin”.

Cellulite tends to develop on the back of the thighs, buttocks, stomach, and upper arms. While cellulite itself does not compromise one’s health, it is however often seen as unsightly and undesirable, and men and women alike go to great lengths to try to mitigate its appearance, frequently resorting to liposuction, laser treatment, acoustic wave therapy, and even subcision, a medical procedure that involves inserting a needle just under the skin to break up the tough bands beneath the skin that cause the appearance of cellulite.

Some of the factors that contribute to cellulite include a sedentary lifestyle/lack of exercise, poor diet, fluid retention, dehydration, poor circulation, hormonal fluctuations associated with the menstrual cycle, and an overload of stress (estrogen and cortisol, for instance), as well as weak collagen structure of the skin, which causes skin thinning and loss of elasticity.

HOW TO MINIMIZE CELLULITE

While cellulite can develop at any age, adolescence is an especially opportune time, as is pregnancy, and increasing age due to increased fatty deposits. Despite the wide variety of costly treatments available, some of the most impactful things you can do to help minimize or reduce the appearance of cellulite revolve around diet and exercise. Indeed, losing extra weight and/or maintaining a healthy weight reduces the amount of visible cellulite. Exercise as well is key because replacing fat with muscle will make cellulite less visible, the more muscle you have the smoother and firmer skin will look. Unfortunately no true long-term therapies exist to eradicate cellulite.

SUPPLEMENTS TO HELP SUPPORT HEALTHY SKIN & REDUCE THE APPEARANCE OF CELLULITE

Some of the best foods and/or supplements to help reduce the appearance of cellulite include green tea because it helps speed up metabolism, inhibits fat absorption, and aids glucose regulation. Green tea also contains theobromine, which stimulates the release of stored fats in the body.

Flaxseeds or flaxseed oil can also be extremely helpful for cellulite, as well as skin health in general since flax modulates estrogen levels and increases collagen production. Hydrating foods are also key (foods that contain a lot of water) because they prevent dehydration and bloating, so naturally minimize the appearance of cellulite.

Other notables to include in the daily regimen include clean protein, as well as essential fatty acids (EFAs) because of their effect on lipolysis (releasing fat from fat cells). Fucoxanthin from kelp is another very promising supplement to consider because it's been shown to help the body burn fat. Studies show that fucoxanthin can help facilitate a 5-10% loss in body weight and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Of course, several topical creams and serums are also available to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, the most interesting of which include birch leaf extract, salvia officinalis, Spanish broom, meadowsweet, horsetail, fennel, Scotch broom, and teasel. Many essential oils are also quite effective at reducing the appearance of cellulite, including rosemary, grapefruit, and cypress oils.
