WHAT IS FERTILITY?

Did you know that roughly 16% (or 1 in 6) of couples in Canada experience infertility? Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular intercourse without using any form of contraception. Both men and women can experience infertility, but the rate increases dramatically for women after the age of 35. There can be many causes of infertility, including poor nutrition, emotional stress, sexually transmitted diseases, thyroid conditions, candida overgrowth, a range of medical conditions, eating disorders, obesity, and hormonal imbalances.

Luckily, there are effective, natural ways to increase your fertility, with diet and lifestyle modifications being among the most important to help boost fertility.

DIET FOR HEALTHY FEMALE FERTILITY

Antioxidants like folate and zinc can deactivate free radicals in your body, which can damage sperm and egg cells. As such, including lots of antioxidants in your diet, and/or via supplementation are both great ways to improve fertility in men and women. Investing in organic foods is also key, because pesticides, herbicides, arsenic, and other toxins that may be found in commercially farmed foods can greatly hinder fertility. Also, be sure to include plenty of omega-rich wild-caught fish which has been shown to reduce inflammation, promote fertilization and implantation, as well as help, regulate ovulation, improve egg quality and delay aging of the ovaries. Food rich in vitamin C should also be generously represented because they help enhance iron absorption – a key nutrient for pregnant mothers. Folate / folic acid will also help enhance fertility and ensure a healthy pregnancy. Vitamin E-rich foods should also be included daily because Vitamin E is critical to the synthesis of many hormones.

LIFESTYLE HYGIENE FOR HEALTHY FEMALE FERTILITY

A variety of conditions can hinder female fertility, such as ovulation disorders which affect the release of eggs from the ovaries. These include polycystic ovary syndrome, hyperprolactinemia, and hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Uterine or cervical polyps or fibroids in the uterus,

fallopian tube damage or blockages, and endometriosis are all common factors. Making a few tweaks to your overall lifestyle can go a long way to helping improve your chances of conceiving.

Some no-nonsense lifestyle choices you can adopt to enhance your fertility include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Preventing sexually transmitted infections
  • Managing stress – adopting meditation, yoga, mindfulness, taking up running, journal – whatever helps you dissipate stress
  • Not smoking tobacco or cannabis. If you do, quit. Smoking ages ovaries and depletes eggs prematurely. It also lowers your chances of conceiving
  • Avoiding or limiting alcohol intake
  • Limiting caffeine intake to one cup daily
  • Not overtraining or overexercising as these can inhibit ovulation and reduce the production of progesterone

SOME OF THE BEST SUPPLEMENTS TO ENHANCE FEMALE FERTILITY

  • Maca - which studies have found may improve fertility.
  • Bee pollen - has also been linked to improved immunity, fertility, and overall nutrition.
  • Bee propolis - especially helpful for women with endometriosis and has been shown to increase chances of becoming pregnant by 40% after 9 months of supplementation.
  • Royal jelly - another bee product, is packed with amino acids, lipids, sugars, vitamins, fatty acids, iron, and calcium, and research has shown that it may improve reproductive health.

Other fertility-enhancing supplements include:

  • Evening primrose oil - to help boost fertility efforts by increasing cervical mucus and strengthening uterine function.
  • Vitex (Chasteberry) - to help balance estrogen and progesterone ratios and stimulates ovaries.
  • Vitamin C - to help prevent sperm agglutination in men.
  • B-Complex vitamins – which are involved in estrogen metabolism.
  • Vitamin E – which is key to help with hormonal balance.
  • Progesterone Cream - can also be invaluable, to help naturally balance out estrogen and progesterone levels.
