What is Lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin is an iron transporter glycoprotein belonging to the transderrin family, originally isolated from bovine milk. It has a very high affinity for iron and 1g of protein can bind 1.4g of iron. It is presnet in epithelial secretions and neutrophils. Human colosturm has the highest concentration of lactoferrin followed by human milk and bovine mik. It is the second most abundant protein found in colostrum. This is not surprising as lactoferrin is important for the proper development of the intestinal system of the newborn. Lactoferrin is also extremely resistant to degradation in the gastrointestinal tract and is absorbed by a specific resceptor found in the intestinal brush border.

Bovine milk contains 1% lactoferrin while mother's milk contains up to 15% of the protein. It is part of our defense system, especially at mucous membranes and supplementation leads to immuno-stimulation. Evidence suggests that supplementation with lactoferrin increases the phagocytic activity of leukocytes and stimulates the production of natural killers cells. Neutrophils contain lactoferrin to bind iron, an essential nutrient for bacterial growth. Lactoferrin is effective both in acidic or alkaline pH.

Benefits of Lactoferrin

Preliminary research indicates that lactoferrin is a potential therapeutic agent for bone disorders. It may be an important physiological regulator of bone formation and growth. It is not surprising that lactoferrin is found in such high concentration in milk, infancy is a time when skeletal growth is occurring very rapidly.

Lactoferrin is a multitasking protein with several biological roles. Lactoferrin has been found to have antimycotic, antiviral, antineoplastic, antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulating and anti-inflammatory activity. Lactoferrin also binds to some toxins and promotes the growth of certain cells. It is helpful for wound healing. It inhibits microbial growth and plays an important role in the formation of the newborn's intestinal flora by preventing the growth of enteropathogenic organisms.

The anti-oxidant and antibacterial activity of lactoferrin comes from its ability at binding iron; iron is a well-known oxidant and its presence is essential for bacterial growth. Lactoferrin prevents the attachment of bacteria to the intestinal wall thus preventing infection. Lactoferricin, a breakdown product of bovine lactoferrin is thought to inhibit viral cell fusion and viral access to cells. The immunomodulatory effects of lactoferrin come from its capacity at promoting T cell growth and differentiation as well as its role in the regulation of cytokines.

Lactoferrin can help in the absorption and transport of iron, manganese, zinc and sugars. It is very important for the proper composition of the intestinal flora; it stimulates the production of gut endothelial cells and prevents the growth of pathogenic organisms while promoting the spread of the beneficial Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. Hence it's addition to baby formulas.

Whether it is to improve nutrient absorption, promote healthy gut bacteria or enhance your immune system and prevent bacterial and viral activity, lactoferrin is a great choice.
