Bitter melon originated in India and it was carried to China in the 14th century. Today, the fruit of the bitter melon is commonly found in tropical regions. There are many different kinds of bitter melon and they differ substantially in the shape and bitterness of the fruit. Bitter melon extract contains a high concentration of the active compounds found in this fruit and possesses many health benefits.
Key Health Benefits of Bitter Melon Extract
Medicinally bitter melon extract has traditional usages for infections, unhealthy cell growth and diabetes. In the Western world, bitter melon is known as a hypoglycemic agent. This means that it has the ability to lower blood sugar, thus reducing the damaging effect of excess sugar that characterizes the condition of diabetes.
Active Compounds Found In Bitter Melon
These health benefits are due to the combination of active compounds in bitter melon, rather than one constituent alone. In other studies, two proteins, contained in the fruit of bitter melon have been shown to have antiviral activity against certain autoimmune disorders; however, this has yet to be proven in clinical trials.
Bitter Melon Supplement Varieties
Bitter melon juice is difficult to find in North America. Most supplements are made from encapsulated dried fruit. Be sure to purchase a product that has been standardized to the triterpene content. This is an assurance that the product contains bitter melon and has some active properties.
Important Safety Information
Bitter melon juice may cause miscarriage and should not be used in pregnancy. Because bitter melon has hypoglycemic effects those taking insulin or oral hypoglycemic drugs should use bitter melon under the care of a health professional.

Oh oh oh oh-I've heard of this one! I forget where, but I was pretty proud to know about bitter melon and it's hypoglycemic effects. I didn't know that the bitterness & taste of bitter melons were so variable. From my experience in college and my PhD, I've learned that bitter compounds often have biological effects and so I bet the different varieties of bitter melon vary in potency, with more bitter ones being more potent. Am I right? Also, I did not know that bitter melon can cause miscarriage-yikes!!
