Deep Dive: The Science Behind Coral Cal-Mag

Coral is the skeletal structure of a marine animal, and also makes up coral reefs. Coral calcium is typically derived from fossilized coral and collected directly from coastal land or the waters that surround it. This form of calcium is composed primarily of calcium carbonate which has a high concentration of elemental calcium (40%), as well as, to a lesser extent, magnesium, and the full spectrum of trace elements. The composition of Coral calcium is really what’s most unique about it; it is said to be very similar to human bone. So much so in fact, that it has been used for human grafts for over 30 years.

Key Health Benefits of Coral Cal-Mag

One of the first things to know about coral calcium is that it is ecologically harvested. That is to say that the calcium is sustainably collected above sea level, from fossilized deposits that have been pushed above the waterline.

Surgeons use coral as a foundation for growing new bone in reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, and trauma. New bone cells grow inside the coral, which eventually dissolve.

As a supplement, coral Cal-Mag helps boost calcium levels in the body and prevents or corrects deficiency. Because coral calcium provides the full spectrum of trace elements (72 to be exact), it also helps alkalize the body, improve digestion, and boost immunity. Though coral calcium does supply a high concentration of elemental calcium, it must be taken with food for proper digestion and absorption. However, it’s important to note that citrate forms of calcium do not need to be taken with food and offer better digestibility and absorption, and do not cause GI upset.

Coral Cal-Mag Supplements: Varieties and Potency

Coral Cal-Mag Potency

Coral Cal-Mag can be found in either 1:1, or 2:1 ratio, and in a few potencies, with an average range of 500/250 mg to 100/500 mg of calcium to magnesium. Cal-Mag supplements are recommended to be taken in divided doses throughout the day.

Coral Cal-Mag Formats

Coral Cal-Mag supplements are primarily available in traditional gelatin capsules, or veggie caps.

Optimizing Your Health with Coral Cal-Mag Supplementation

Calcium and magnesium are essential to building and maintaining strong bones and teeth, and a quality Cal-Mag supplement can help ensure you’re getting enough of these essential minerals each day. Coral calcium is a good option to help build bones, prevent osteoporosis, and regulate muscle contraction (including that of the heart). Coral Cal-Mag should be combined with Vitamin D to ensure optimal absorption.
